Project Controller:


The Submarine Project Controller is accountable for the preparation of labour and material estimates for bid inquiries received from the Canadian Submarine Management Group.

This position also prepares all production work instructions ensuring all relevant standards are incorporated (C-23 SUB SAFE / ISO / NES / SSP).


What you'll do:


  • Prepares labour and material estimates for Submarine repair tasks based on accurate evaluations of customer specifications, terms and conditions, detailed or outline specifications, drawings, sketches, or following verbal instructions
  • Prepares detailed production plans for the execution of submarine repair tasks complete with all required inspection points and other owners requirements
  • Communicates with owners/customer representatives and Project Managers throughout the estimating process, after contract award, and during vessel refit, to ensure a clear understanding of the scope of work and to identify other potential work arising from the project
  • Carries out calculations (e.g. areas, weights, lengths, capacities, etc.) to form the basis for estimates and uses knowledge of Naval Regulations (NES, TDP, MRDB) to determine appropriate dimensions, materials, and equipment, if not specified
  • With direction from the Support Manager, assesses scope and practicality of specifications and owner expectations by reviewing, discussing and clarifying details, visiting vessels, attending bidders' conferences and incorporating specification amendments to ensure the estimate is accurate and complete
  • Provides management with summaries for estimated labour and material and overviews of work content, including work requiring special consideration with regard to complexity, time requirements, and nonavailability of products or services
  • Provides technical and administrative assistance to the production department by gathering customer contact information, obtaining docking information, maintaining estimating records and files, and sourcing and acquiring quotes, ensuring that work can be completed on time
  • Maintains positive relationships with customers through pre
- and post-contract communication, ensuring that customers are completely satisfied


What you'll bring:


  • Completion of Grade 12 education, plus a Postsecondary Diploma or Degree from a recognized technical institution and or a trade ticket
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the marine industry with a focus on repair and or servicing activities
  • Demonstration of outstanding business ethics, integrity, confidentiality and honesty in all situations
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written, including knowledge of accurate marine terminology
  • A strong sense of customer service orientation
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, problem solving, decisionmaking, negotiating, and interpersonal skills
  • Proven track record to prepare accurate estimates. Ability to read technical drawings and interpret contract and tender documentation requirements
  • Knowledge of applicable rules and regulations in the marine industry
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable SMC corporate policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with all shipyard trades and knowledge of marine equipment and systems
  • Excellent time management and works well under pressure
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet
