Labour & Paint Superintendent:

Accountable for the safe, productive, and efficient operation of the paint-labour department at Victoria Shipyards.

Responsibilities include providing direction to charge-hands and the paint-labour workforce for all projects carried out within the paint-labour facilities, ensuring that they are appropriately staffed and supervised to meet schedule and customer requirements, and that all work is carried out in accordance with shipyard safety, quality and environmental procedures and standards.

The incumbent shall provide departmental leadership, direction & motivation ensuring that acceptable efficiency and quality levels are consistently maintained.

The incumbent will develop the paint-labour department into a department capable of the paint-labour work for large repair and new construction projects as well as providing direction for continued process improvement within the paint-labour department.


Note:

Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at Victoria Shipyards located at 825 Admirals Road Victoria, B.C.



What you'll do

  • Supervises and provides mentorship to the paintlabour team of approximately unionized employees.
  • The complexity of the position is in maintaining continuous improvement in a dynamic repair and conversion environment.
  • Creativity is required to coordinate the workload and prioritize so that budget, schedules and customer requirements are achieved.
  • Errors or misjudgments could result in injury or death, rework, delay in schedule, and/or additional costs to project, customer dissatisfaction, union grievances, and damage to equipment or facilities.
  • Communicates with Directors, Senior Managers, Project and Production Managers, regarding labour demands, schedules, priorities, materials, safety, time losses, workmanship, employee performance, training, jurisdictional disputes, facilities, and wellness for time loss injuries.
  • Communicates frequently with customers regarding job progress, work arisings, workmanship, schedule, and other relevant matters, and with suppliers regarding equipment and supplies, regulatory agencies regarding codes, approvals, class requirements and surveys, and union business agents regarding grievances, labour requirements, disciplinary actions, layoffs & hires and other relevant matters.
  • Coordinates paintlabour projects by maintaining labour loading as dictated by work schedules, providing information, planning and direction for chargehands, ensuring workmanship meets all quality standards and is completed within budget and schedule.
  • Provides leadership to paintlabour chargehands and workers by providing mentorship and training where needed to maintain appropriate standards, taking disciplinary action when required, and ensuring compliance with WCB regulations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of paintlabour equipment & facilities, ensuring deficiencies are identified and rectified. Review paintlabour estimates with estimators.

What you'll bring
years of work experience in a supervisory position is required. A trade qualification is desirable.

  • Demonstrating a high standard of business conduct and ethics; dealing with all situations and issues with integrity and honesty
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language, both verbal and written, including knowledge of correct marine terminology
  • Ability to communicate optimally with customers, management, and workforce.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, problem solving, communication, leadership, and social skills
  • Knowledge of Seaspan ULC policies and procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
