RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Of all the rituals we human beings have created in our lives, sharing good food with friends and family is one of the most important, memorable and enduring. As a Culinary Care Partner
  • Cook, you play a pivotal role in making sure that food is prepared and served with care and appeals to all the senses.
  • Preparing and serving food according to menus that meet the preferences of the elders and making sure that adjustments are made according to staff requests, guests, and special catering functions.
  • Cooking a variety of foods using various methods such as roasting, frying, grilling, steaming, poaching, boiling and baking.
  • Seasoning a variety of foods with herbs and spices, and taste testing to ensure palatability and proper temperature and adjusting accordingly.
  • Carving and portioning foods to ensure yield meets assigned quantities required for the various neighborhoods and other catered events.
  • Preparing any foods for therapeutic diets, nourishments, and those requiring texture modifications ie. cutup, minced, puree.
  • Planning cooking schedules that produce food of the highest quality with the optimal retention of nutritional value and appearance and that is ready to be served on time.
  • Ability to operate related food services equipment; ie. ovens, stoves, steamers, robot coupe, dishwashers, etc.
  • Understanding and following Food Safe practices including, but not limited to, temperature control, using approved cleaning methods, and demonstrating good hand and body hygiene.
  • Developing relationships with the elders to ensure that foods and beverages of their choosing are readily available as desired. This would be met by preparing and serving beverages and food items such as snacks, sandwiches, tea, coffee, juice, toast and ensuring the country kitchens are stocked accordingly.
  • Making sure dishes, utensils, pots, and pans are washed, sanitized, and put away until next use.
  • Being available to help to put away delivered supplies according to established procedures.
  • Serving meals in the neighborhoods to elders and guests so that their nutritional desires can be met throughout the day.
  • Creating a safe work area by keeping areas organized and free of obstructions.
  • Reporting on equipment and items in need of repair via identified procedures.
  • Collaborating with the neighborhood team to plan and participate in special celebrations and spontaneous events.
  • Collaborating with and providing leadership and direction to fellow Culinary Care Partners
  • Dietary Aides
  • Being available to help with other related duties.
  • Completing safety related training as required.
  • Reporting potential or actual safety concerns; contributing to and following safe practices in accordance with Work Safe BC, Eden Gardens Policies, and Food Safety Guidelines.

REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from a recognized 12 month program in cooking or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certification (current and valid)
  • Must be physically and mentally fit for the work environment; ie. has the ability to move freely about, lift or push up to 50 lbs, stoop, kneel, and reach
  • Speak, read, and write the English language in an understandable manner
  • Pass a Criminal Record Check upon hiring and every 5 years thereafter
  • Must be fully vaccinated against Covid1
  • Must either receive annual flu vaccine, or wear appropriate PPE as prescribed by the PHO for the recommended flu season
