    The Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, invites applications for a Research Associate position in Proteomics to join a dedicated and highly motivated team with expertise in proteomics, cell biology, molecular biology and microbiology, with research focused on protein homeostasis and recombinant expression.

    The successful candidate will have a completed a PhD and have a minimum of three years of additional experience as Postdoctoral Fellow in academia or Scientist in the private sector. The candidate requires evidence of a solid track record in research with first authored peer-review research articles. The candidate will have a hands-on experience with protein mass spectrometry using LC-MS/MS approaches, synthetic biology and molecular biology for the establishment of DNA libraries, as well as iPSC and yeast cell models. We seek a creative individual with strong biochemistry, cell biology, computational biology, and bioengineering background. Ideally the applicant should have experience handling all aspects of the workflow associated to a proteomic experiment including sample preparation using stable isotopes for labeling and fractionation, the loading of the samples on the instrument and analyzing the data. Candidates should be familiar with current mass spectrometry instrumentation and proteomics software. The position will be filled by a well-organized, enthusiastic team player with excellent communication skills, who enjoys lab work, creative trouble-shooting, is independent, and who isn't afraid of trying new things.

    Responsibilities will include:

    • Develop a proteomic-based research project integrated in the lab research program
    • Implement or develop novel proteomics and systems biology methods in collaboration with other researchers
    • Analyze mass spectrometry data and help optimize the computational platforms
    • Diligently document and record results of analyses and investigations
    • Work independently, and collaboratively with other researchers and technicians to perform a wide range of specialized and routine laboratory techniques in proteomics
    • Contribute to the establishment of new screening methods by overseeing the experimental designs of other researchers and technicians in the research lab
    • Coordinate general operation of the research lab
    • Help optimize the performance of existing methods and instrument in the research lab
    • Help operate and maintain basic laboratory instrumentation, liquid handler, HPLC and LC-MS/MS instruments
    • Read and keep up with scientific literature relevant to proteomics research
    • Train and/or supervise scientists in the affiliated labs on the proteomics platform and molecular and synthetic biology methods
    • Write and/or participate to the writing of scientific articles and research grants

    The Research Associate will need to have excellent communications and presentation skills, be highly organized, have the ability to manage time effectively, and capable to multitask by working on multiple projects over a period of time. They will be required to have exceptional attention to details, strong documentation skills and able to meet deadlines, as well as be able to work well in an academic setting, with ability to work independently and collaboratively.

    The expected pay range for this position is $66,924 to $76,000 per year at full time equivalence.
