The Town of New Tecumseth is looking for a Roads Labourer (Seasonal) to join our team until November.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations - Roads, this position performs all aspects of work related to the servicing, maintenance and inspection of the Towns' right of ways in both urban and rural settings including but not limited to roads, sidewalks, traffic control devices, ditches,
culverts, bridges, storm sewers, street trees, streetlights, and works yards. Under the direction

of the immediate Supervisor or Senior Operator, the Roads Labourer carries out all duties using appropriate equipment effectively and in a manner that will ensure the safety of self, co-workers and the general public.


How you contribute to our organization:

  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment in a clean and tidy condition; performs daily inspections of same. Records deficiencies in the Vehicle Inspection Report which is then submitted to the Senior Operator or Supervisor for forwarding to the Fleet Division. Keeps all documents up to date in accordance with MTO and Town Standards; Performs minor maintenance and repairs to equipment while on the job.
  • Mainly performs sidewalk maintenance operations using "Litter Vac".
  • Performs downtown maintenance including, but not limited to, debris and litter pick up, emptying of garbage receptacle, painting of benches, decorative lamps and garbage receptacles, installation of banners and other decorative items.
  • Helps maintain the general right of way with such duties as mowing of grass, debris and litter pick up, culvert cleaning, repairing/replacing signs, graffiti removal, and vegetation control.
  • Assists with installation of temporary traffic control devices such as lane and road closures, detours, flagging and all other required work zone safety requirements as per the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7. May be required to act as a traffic control person via flagging or operation of other traffic control devices.
  • Assists with repairs and maintenance of road networks including hard surfaces (asphalt/concrete) and gravel surfaces in an urban and rural environment, including but not limited to cold patching, saw cut and asphalt removals, tack coating, and hot laid asphalt paving.
  • Assists in maintaining ditches including, but not limited to, removal of sediment, debris, and garbage from roadside ditches, ensuring proper elevations and depth of ditches and culverts. Assists with site restorations, including raking of topsoil, grass seed and possibility of laying sod.

What you bring to the team:

  • Requires successful completion of a high school diploma.
  • Requires a G class driver's licence, and the ability to submit a clean driver's abstract upon hire.
  • Requires Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification (or the ability to obtain within a month of hire).
  • 12 years of experience in a similar position would be an asset.
  • Experience with sidewalk machines, littervacs, and other small utility sized equipment is an asset.
  • Must be comfortable using electronic devices such as tablets, iPads and laptops.

Pay Rate:
$ $28.72, plus 4% vacation pay and optional enrolment in OMERS pension plan


Hours: 40 hours per week
