    Job Description:

    Reporting to the Manager, Total Compensation, the Compensation Analyst assists and coordinates job design, documentation, evaluation, and salary administration for assigned employee groups. The incumbent assists in developing and writing job descriptions in collaboration with managers. The incumbent monitors and provides analysis/ recommendations regarding compensation.

    The incumbent supports the maintenance of pay equity requirements for Algonquin College by ensuring that the job descriptions for the non-bargaining positions of the College are maintained and relevant to the work requirements of the payroll authorizations.

    The incumbent provides regular on-going guidance to Managers regarding the job evaluation process, salary calculation process, how to write job descriptions and the evaluation of roles. The incumbent conducts training for Managers who are responsible for job content and job changes related to both bargaining and non-bargaining roles.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Job Classification

  • Developing/writing and updating job descriptions to accurately describe job content, utilizing specialized, relational database job description software;
  • Maintains and updates job descriptions, classification and wage calculation process by communicating with all parties involved;
  • Assists with arranging the evaluation of job descriptions for the job evaluation committees.
  • Analysis/ Planning

  • Developing best practices, techniques, and tools for project planning;
  • Researching and analyzing compensation trends and competitive compensation practices in the job market;
  • Researching and analyzing regarding job evaluation and applying consistent application of job evaluation tools;
  • Periodically (e.g., once a year) identifying potential problems and improvement related to job descriptions and evaluations and makes recommendations for change;
  • Monitoring and maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of data and documents related to compensation and pension for different databases;
  • Making recommendations based on data analyses and statistical reports.
  • Administration

  • Completion of peer review activities to ensure compensation activities (e.g., salary calculations, special compensation programs, etc.) are error free prior to implementation;
  • Reviewing and communicating salary calculation results and reports to hiring departments;
  • Administration of daily compensation Workday requests to confirm prior to payroll processing.
  • Implementing Policies/ Rules/ Legislations/ Procedures

  • Ensuring pay equity by conducting analysis and comparison of similar positions within departments, College-wide and external market;
  • Monitoring/ ensuring compliance with collective agreements, terms & conditions of employment, College policies and procedures and legislative requirements;
  • Assisting in the development, writing, editing, and modification of operating policies, guidelines, and procedures, as appropriate;
  • Assisting with periodic pay equity reviews of the compensation across all employee groups at the College to ensure compliance with statutory and internal requirements
  • Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum four (4) year degree, preferably in Human Resources or equivalent;
  • Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) is an asset;
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in job evaluation and classification, preferably within an educational organization;
  • Labour relations experience, supporting grievance meetings, preparation for grievances and arbitration;
  • Previous experience in interpreting legislation, collective agreements and other applicable policies and procedures;
  • Experience in an educational workplace would be an asset;
  • Training in Pay Equity and the compliance of the Act;
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret College policies and procedures, Collective Agreements and other related legislative documentation;
  • Excellent client service, communication, listening and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders;
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and records management skills;
  • Ability to set priorities and work to deadlines;
  • Must possess tact, diplomacy and sensitivity and a respect for confidentiality;
  • Ability to anticipate needs and articulate a vision for change;
  • Knowledge of College operations outside of Human Resources;
  • Technical, analytical and mathematic ability. Ability to interpret data.
