What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:

  • Provide team leadership to communications staff, monitoring and coordinating the flow of work and ensure timely completion.
  • Provide strategic advice and support to the Minister, Deputy Minister and senior management on strategic communications initiatives.
  • Lead the planning, development and implementation of a broad range of strategic communications projects, campaigns and initiatives.
  • Provide advice to senior ministry staff on strategic communications, public and media relations, and marketing campaigns related to policy initiatives and program changes.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships in support of ministry programs, services, goals and priorities.
  • Act for the Manager, Strategic Communications and Implementation during absences.

How do I qualify?:


Leadership and project management skills:


  • You have leadership skills to motivate team members and provide technical direction, coaching, guidance, orientation and training.
  • You can oversee the completion of work and provide feedback on strategic communications products.
  • You can monitor and coordinate workflow and recommend process changes to promote productivity and improve performance
  • You have proven project management skills to lead and coordinate all phases of strategic communications projects and ensure successful completion.

Strategic communications experience:


  • You have experience developing strategic communications plans to support core business goals, initiatives and priorities.
  • You have knowledge of digital and social media platforms to incorporate into strategic communications plans, programs, and initiatives.
  • You have the ability to quickly gain knowledge of government and ministry priorities, core businesses, mandate and goals and relevant legislation.

Communications and interpersonal skills:


  • You have effective oral and written communications skills to articulate and simplify complex policy/legislation for public and media audiences.
  • You can prepare and edit a diverse range of communications materials and recommendations for various audiences.
  • You have proven relationship management skills to develop and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with stakeholders and ministry partners.
  • You can provide strategic advice and guidance to senior management, create and present communications materials for senior officials to make informed decisions.

Analytical skills:


  • You have research and analysis skills to lead and conduct research and environmental scans on strategic communications trends, developments and best practices.
  • You can develop performance measurement mechanisms for postimplementation evaluation of programs and initiatives.
  • You have strategic thinking skills to conceptualize responses and solutions to complicated issues, problems and opportunities involving a multitude of stakeholders.
