What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:

  • enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its related regulations.
- enforce the Building Opportunities for the Skilled Trades Act (BOSTA) and associated regulations.
- act as agents in the enforcement of other applicable legislation such as: Hazardous Products Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Act.
- conduct comprehensive inspections and investigations, write orders and reports.
- engage in enforcement activities including prosecutions.
- work with health and safety partners, workers, union/management to promote safe work practices and working conditions with workers, unions and management through the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).


How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • You must be able to travel extensively and province wide, respond to afterhour calls, and work evenings and weekends as part of regular scheduled work.
  • You must have common core program P770210.
  • You have workrelated mine experience or other equivalent training.

Technical knowledge:


  • You have working knowledge, practical experience, training, or education in mining or related workplaces, and with mining methods, equipment, and processes.
  • You have knowledge of trends, new developments and hazards in the field of Occupational Health and Safety in order to identify and evaluate safety hazards and controls.
  • You have experience with mining operations and equipment to identify, evaluate and control health and safety hazards.
  • You have the ability to conduct inspections and investigations including interviewing experience and experience in handling evidence.
  • You have the ability to administer the Provincial Offences Act and evidence in court.
  • You have working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and relevant regulations, standards and legislation relevant to the appropriate mining sector including but not limited to Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Designated Substances, Trades Qualifications and Apprenticeship Act.

Analytical skills:


  • You have the ability to interpret information collected that may be technical in nature and assess whether employer's operation is in compliance with legislation, regulations, policies and standards, and determine strategies/action(s) to be taken.
  • You possess reasoning and judgement skills to maintain objectivity.
  • You are able to assess and use the appropriate level of authority to enforce the Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • You can remain neutral through investigations and inspections.

Communication and Interpersonal skills:


  • You have conflict resolution and interpersonal skills with the ability to impact and influence others to a logical/appropriate course of action.
  • You can respect differing interests and conflicting priorities.
  • You have well developed communication skills to promote compliance, provide advice and consultation.
  • You have well developed oral and written communications skills to accurately document and convey information including report writing.

Other important skills:


  • You have planning and organizational skills to coordinate own workload.
  • You are a results oriented person and have the ability to deliver on performance objectives.
