Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and confidential typing, pathology transcription dictation and subsequent handling and
communication of information for Laboratory Medicine Services

  • Assist with central registration of patient information into the Hospital Information System
  • Perform bookings for Specialized Outpatient Clinics
  • Represent the organization and department in a professional manner at all times in keeping with Norfolk
General Hospital's mission and values


Position Qualifications:


  • Graduate of a recognized college level Medical Administrative Program or equivalent which includes

- medical terminology
  • Excellent keyboarding skills with a typing speed of at least 60 WPM
  • Minimum 3 years' experience typing/dictatyping surgical pathology and autopsy reports preferred
  • Previous experience in a lab secretary role preferred
  • Excellent working knowledge of Windows based systems with skills in Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Previous experience with hospital information system Meditech preferred
  • Excellent customer relations and problemsolving skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with patients and all disciplines
  • Ability to work well with frequent interruptions and manage multiple tasks
  • Excellent attendance
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient rights and patient partnered care

Hours of Work:

Must be available to work shifts, weekends and holidays as required
