Job Summary
- Reporting to the Assistant Director, Facilities Operations, the incumbent is responsible for carrying out minor repairs to buildings under the jurisdiction of Ancillary Services.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviews Ancillary Services Maintenance Request tickets and Room Inspection Reports (KX) on computer system and identifies whether problems can be repaired by the USP or a tradesperson, uses KX to update status of the ticket and correspond to residents
- Submits Service Requests to FAMIS computer systems as directed by Assistant Director, Facilities Operations
- Makes recommendations regarding operating problems and building maintenance issues
- Performs routine inspections of buildings and grounds areas
- Accompanies trades staff and external contractors (normally assigned by the Department of Facilities Management) to identify the problem
- Arranges material acquisition through the Department of Facilities Management and through local suppliers using and reconciling the University Purchasing Card
- Carries a cell phone while at work (provided)
- Sets up Temp Spaces and move furniture
- Performs daily, weekly, and monthly rounds, inspections, and completes paperwork for Fire Safety Binders in each building
- Performs minor maintenance tasks such as:
- Touch-up painting (100ft2/3m2)
- Ceiling tile replacement (100ft2)
- Replace/adjust door closures
- Replace cores in locks
- Replace light bulbs
- Unclog toilets/sinks/showers/tubs
- Assists other Ancillary Services USPs in other buildings as required
- Performs other related duties as required
Note
A Utility Service Person will not perform certified trades work
This position works during the check-in period over the Labour Day weekend each year.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Dalhousie's vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination.
However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduation and three to five years' building and maintenance experience required
- Completion of Building Service Technician course preferable
- Electrical and/or mechanical aptitude preferable
- General knowledge of building systems, building codes and fire codes
- Ability to read, interpret and prioritize work order required
- Proficiency in the use of the tools of the trade (eg. Cordless drill/driver, plunger, saw, etc.)
- Ability to work comfortably at heights (including personal lifts) and in confined spaces
- General safety (i.e. asbestos, mould, etc) and WHMIS training an asset
- Strong interpersonal skills and good communication as position works directly with students and various employee groups
- Reliable and punctual
- Ability to work independently and take direction.
- Must be willing and able to work overtime as required.
- Familiar with the current Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as University and Government rules and regulations
- Good computer and internet skills
- Selfstarter with initiative to investigate problem areas
- Experience working in an environment with young adults an asset
