***: Reporting to the Director, SHOAL Centre and Senior Services, the Seniors Housing Navigator joins a dynamic, multi-faceted team working in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Beacon Community Services that make a difference in people's lives every day. The role of the Seniors Housing Navigator is to provide case management services for seniors who are experiencing housing related issues that include homelessness or at risk of being homeless. The current issues seniors face are complex and this position is responsible for providing guidance and outlining realistic action steps for both seniors and stakeholders to arrive at a resolution.

The successful applicant will be a self-driven and motivated individual who can work under minimum supervision. They must be able to build positive relationships with co-workers, volunteers, clients, housing providers, and community stakeholders.

Thorough knowledge of government and community resources and programs for seniors and those defined as, 'hard to house' a must.

The applicant will be a creative problem solver who can work under stress and remain calm under tight timelines. They will be highly organized individuals who are detail oriented.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Client intake and internal/external resource and referral
  • Respond to housing related inquiries for case management
  • Make referrals to internal resources and supportive services
  • Assist clients experiencing homelessness in accessing emergency shelter and support services
  • Network with service providers and make referrals for the clients as appropriate including the health authority and mental health support programs
  • Represent the agency in the community when requested
  • Work with building managers and landlords to prevent evictions of clients when necessary
  • Maintain accurate and appropriate records as required and prepare reports as requested
  • Promote programs by participating in community outreach and marketing Beacon Community Services.
  • Network and develop partnerships with other organizations and agencies
  • Actively participate in the evaluation, reporting, Community of Practice activities of the funders and cobackbones as a site of collaborative learning and quality assurance
  • Prepare quarterly reports to Manager of SHOAL Community Centre
  • Other duties as required based on operational need

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:


  • Completion of recognized postsecondary education in any of the following categories: community social service, mental health and addiction, or gerontology
  • 13 years experience working with seniors, those who have experience homelessness, or people living with mental illness and/or addiction
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Experience facilitating workshops both inperson and virtually
  • First aid certification considered an asset
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate and Violence Prevention is and asset

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Ability to stay positive and maintain a professional attitude
  • Skilled in trauma informed approach in communication and deescalation
  • Knowledge of the systems that can lead to homelessness and/or poverty
  • Knowledge of community resources for seniors
  • Ability to organize and participate in community engagement activities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and remain calm
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office 365 Applications and Database Management
