The Instructor Teen Nights Program will be responsible for ensuring service excellence in all YMCA Program spaces and will oversee the supervision and safe operation of the programs and spaces, ensuring that all Teen Nights program principles, standards and procedures are met.

The Instructor Teen Nights will actively participate in Teen Night Council planning meetings and will also provide direct program delivery, coaching and leadership as required.


In this role, you will:


  • Ensure the delivery of Teen Nights programming with a focus on building and facilitating participant relationships.
  • Participate in Teen Council meetings to ensure facilitation of weekly planning, organizing, development, and delivery of Teen Nights program offering.
  • Coach volunteers to ensure compliance with Healthy Adolescent Development standards and expectations as outlined in the Teen Nights Program Theory and audit tool.
  • Recruit Teen Council members and other volunteers to lead program development and delivery.
  • Support the training, coaching and mentoring of local Teen Night volunteers.
  • Ensure the safety of all activities and programs throughout the program and respond immediately to rectify all safety, injury and emergency concerns.
  • Be responsible for encouraging a positive environment, and deal effectively and professionally with YMCA members concern.
  • Build relationship with participants and proactively seek opportunities to challenge participants to seek appropriate and progressively challenging positive youth development opportunities.
  • Provide support and be present during the entire program period and circulate through all program areas in rotation to ensure the above stated objectives are being met. Remain visible and approachable at all times.
  • Encourage and incorporate youth leadership, voice and ongoing program feedback.
  • In collaboration with Teen Council members, program staff and volunteers, assist and encourage program participants to access additional appropriate YMCA and local community youth support offerings.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviours in line with our Mission, Vision and Values as reflected in our YMCA competencies; take a member focused approach to increase their understanding of programs offered across the Association. Represent the YMCA and the Association in a professional manner.
  • Understand the importance of the volunteer staff partnership and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealing with members, volunteers, donors and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You bring:


  • Postsecondary education in the field of Recreation and Leisure, youth/social work or related field
  • Certification from YMCA Canada in Healthy Adolescent Development
  • Minimum 1 year experience in facilitating, mentoring or instructing youthrelated programs
  • Demonstrated experience in effective coaching and development skills
  • Ability to encourage and motivate participants, volunteers and staff and to acknowledge and appreciate achievements and contributions
  • Ability to deal effectively with escalated participant concerns and achieve successful outcomes
  • Effective organizational skills, detailoriented
  • Evidence of continuing professional development in working with youth an asset
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR required
  • Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work including early mornings, evenings and weekends
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
