Under the direction of the Manager, Office of Sustainability, the Sustainability Planner works collaboratively with City Departments, other levels of government, and the community to achieve the City's goals of sustainability and environmental quality as directed by the Mayor and Council by providing the administrative support and coordination appropriate to develop, maintain and enhance sustainability initiatives.

This includes developing detailed action plans, maintaining timelines and budgets, conducting research, performing analysis through to implementation and designing public engagement processes.

The Sustainability Planner is responsible for reporting on activities in both quantitative and qualitative forms.


As the _Sustainability Planner_
_ _you will**:

  • Provide administrative support and coordination to develop, maintain and enhance sustainability initiatives and goals, (such as, but not limited to, the Climate Action and Resilience Committee of Council).
  • Deliver consultation and communication, internally and externally, working directly to involve the community in the sustainability consultation process
  • Participate in divisional initiatives and tasks related to mid
- and long-range planning.

  • Conduct research, analyze results and provide recommendations in support of sustainability initiatives.

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Bachelor's degree: Public Administration, Environmental Studies/Science, Natural Resource Management or Sustainability Planning with a focus on municipal environmental issues, or an equivalent combination of academic and experience (critical)
  • Master's Degree in Natural Resource Management, Planning, Environmental Studies/Science (desirable)
  • Environmental Professional Designation (desirable)
  • Environmental Professional Auditor Designation (desirable)
  • A minimum of twelve (12) months experience in planning/implementing environmental/sustainability initiatives.
  • Demonstrated organizational, research, analytical and decisionmaking abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective professional and working relationships with a wide variety of people (including elected and senior appointed officials).
  • Demonstrated sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local government issues and working knowledge of organizational change, theory and practice.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation related to environmental/sustainability issues.
  • Demonstrated highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated public presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrated high degree of initiative and ability to work with mínimal supervision and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • General political awareness
  • Working knowledge of sustainable development principles.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to be discreet.
  • Must have, or be able to acquire in a reasonable period of time, a thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions and regulations that are applicable to the position's area of work.
