This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Administrative and Professional Officer Agreement, this full-time continuing position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $68,101 to $113,509.


Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

UAPS (University of Alberta Protective Services) is one of five operational units reporting to the portfolio of Associate Vice President, Asset Management & Operations Services, within Facilities & Operations.

The mission of UAPS is to provide a positive university environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors by preventing, intervening, and responding to risks and emerging issues around safety and security.


Position


The Administrative and Strategic Support Officer, who is not a Peace Officer, is responsible for continuously improving administrative functions to enable UAPS to deliver services with greater efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability.


Reporting to the director, the administrative and strategic support officer is a key leadership team member, ensuring that UAPS administrative priorities and initiatives align with key Asset Management & Operations performance indicators, specifically how "we care for our campuses together.

"

  • Supervise and Coordinate with the Security Coordinator to oversee and grow the UAPS proprietary security agent program, which includes ongoing recruitment and training, supervision and performance management, client communication and relationship building, compliance, and legal considerations
  • To ensure compliance, oversee and manage the annual UAPS training, development, and research; strategic plan requirements;
  • Effectively manage UAPS directives and policies, to ensure consistency, transparency, and accountability to mitigate risk and ensure regulatory and legal compliance;
  • Assists the Director in developing procedures/policies to improve UAPS performance following UAPPOL policies, legislative requirements, and best practices; and
  • Ensures that UAPS complies with all Solicitor General Standards set out by the Alberta Peace Officer Program and Security Services and Investigators Act.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Related university degree or college diploma with at least (5) years of progressive safety and security managerial experience;
  • Extensive experience creating written directives and policies;
  • Exceptional leadership and supervisory experience qualities anchored in specialized training relating to leadership, management, and communications; and
  • Extensive experience in provincial statutes, criminal and administrative law, rules of natural justice, professional and procedural standards for Alberta Community Peace Officers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience preferably with a policing or peace officer background
