about the role:

The Medical Secretary position is part of the Integrated Recovery and COVID Care Clinics in the Downtown East OHT. The Recovery Clinics increase access to preventative care, primary care, mental health, and community support services. There will also be a focus on improving access to COVID testing, vaccines and anti-viral. The Integrated Recovery and COVID Care Clinics are in partnership with Regent Park Health Centre

The medical secretary must be capable of working in a fast-paced environment, which can at times become chaotic. They should be able to maintain perspective and a willingness to assist clients who may present challenges.


day to day responsibilities:


  • Greet, assist and direct clients.
  • Register clients for the Integrated Recovery and COVID Care Clinics.
  • Update client EMR charts upon client arrival, provide initial logístical client support, schedule and confirm appointment times.
  • Provide secretarial support to the provider by completing external referrals using EMR, process digital faxes and scan paper documents into the client EMR charts in a timely manner.
  • Recording and validating health cards, and processing health claims as appropriate.
  • Following up with clients with appointments, referrals as requested by team members.
  • Provide support as needed to successfully run vaccination hubs.

To thrive in this role, you'll need

education/experience

  • Completion of a Medical Secretary Diploma and a minimum of two years medical secretarial experience or an equivalent blend.
  • Electronic Medical Records Applications (Accuro and PSS) experience is a definite asset.
  • Experience working with individuals within Sherbourne's target communities: those who are homeless and under housed, experiencing mental health and substance use issues, the 2SLGBTQ community, and newcomers to Canada.

  • Accurate typing speed of 50 words per minute.
  • Proven superior customer service skills
  • Ability to work or have experience dealing with difficult people in a fastpaced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Proven ability to work within a health and community care team.
  • Ability to manage challenging encounters and deescalate situations.
  • Ability to follow through and follow up on delegated tasks in a defined manner.
  • Experience working in a community setting with health and social service providers
  • Ability to work within an antioppression framework; understands and appreciates the diversity of our client and staff population and community.
