Job Overview


As an Estimator in the Project Management Office, you will be responsible for managing and co-ordinating projects related to estimating the cost of materials, labour, and equipment for projects from contract bids, quotations, drawing and specification.

The Estimator works closely with vendors, clients, engineers, subcontractors, and other internal/external parties to prepare estimates. This role supports the organization by providing alternative recommendations to lower project costs and factoring in unexpected costs.


Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate construction projects, and prepare construction progress schedules
  • Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors to prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications
  • Prepare estimates related to costs of material, labour and equipment and subcontracts for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications primarily in the transmission and distribution space
  • Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyse tenders, recommend tender awards and negotiations
  • Establish and maintain the tendering process
  • Set up cost monitoring and reporting procedures
  • Prepare cost and expenditure statements and forecasts at regular intervals for the duration of a project
  • Provide alternative recommendations to lower project costs and factor in unexpected costs
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
  • Assist with the development of project execution plans, construction bid schedules, bid risks and assumptions documents, as well as overall technical guidance for proposal development
  • Attend and assist in project planning sessions and team meetings to provide estimating input
  • Interface and communicate effectively (written and oral) with the estimating team, with all levels of management, clients and industry contacts
  • Attend site visits when required

Qualifications and Requirements

  • University degree or diploma in Engineering, Bachelor of Commerce Degree (BCom), Construction Engineering/Management/Electrical Engineering Certificate, or related field and/or a combination of education and trade experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in cost estimating in the construction industry, including estimating cost of materials, labour and equipment for projects from RFP/RFQ/quotations
  • Experience working with or around electrical plant or equipment (stations, lines, etc.)
  • Proven ability to successfully lead pursuits of varying value and complexity in various delivery methods.
  • Advanced experience using Microsoft Office, including the ability to create reports, documents, presentations and spreadsheets in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Project. Strong aptitude for adopting new technology
  • Ability to understand blueprints, scheduling functions, tendering processes, directory of vendors, and attend preconstruction meetings
  • Resourcefulness and selfmotivation with strong organizational skills and ability to multi

  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with stakeholders including the ability to solicit subtrade partners and suppliers
  • Ability to work accurately, effectively under pressure and be adaptable to flexible work schedule when required to meet deadlines
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required
