Reporting to Professional Practice, the primary role of the Clinical Learning Specialist is to support the delivery of interprofessional, quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing by facilitating staff development, through orientation, continuing education and performance review in the clinical setting.

The Clinical Learning Specialist provides leadership by promoting, developing, and implementing evidence-based practice.

He/she acts as a role model for staff in accordance with professional standards, KHSC's Values and strategy, in both the formal and informal learning environments.

The Clinical Learning Specialist develops a network with academic centres and the health care community regarding education and professional development.

Visibility and availability to staff on a daily basis is essential to the success of this position.


Within this role the Clinical Learning Specialist is accountable for contributing to the delivery of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre's strategy.

As an employee, one must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for actively promoting and supporting corporate concerns.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:


  • Develops implements and evaluates orientation/staff development programs based on individual or group staff learning needs, clinical practice standards, treatment trends, technical changes, certification requirements and relevant research findings.
  • Develops and evaluates learning materials as required for patient care education programs focusing on patients and families.
  • Maintains staff development records and/or learning plans as required.
  • Serves as a resource to the Program Manager regarding staff performance.
  • Supports a practice model that encourages accountability, mutual respect, shared planning, cooperation, shared experience and decision making with a common goal and vision.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of program specific staff education initiatives
  • Supports program staff in corporate education initiatives as required
  • Maintains communication with Program Manager, Interprofessional Learning Specialist (s), and Directors
  • Professional Practice Nursing and Allied Health
  • Maintains knowledge of current research, related to program specialty (ie, Emergency Medicine), and collaborates in the research process as required.
  • Promotes evidencebased practice and bestpractice initiatives.
  • Utilizes current health related literature in education program development.
  • Identifies and introduces clinically significant research findings to program staff and other members of the patient care team.
  • Facilitates patient care policy and procedure development based on research and/or standards of practice.
  • Coordinates and/or facilitates education for staff as required.
  • Maintains clinical knowledge and competency, with emphasis in clinical specialty.
  • Participates on committees as required.
  • Networks with academic centres, Nursing Interest Groups and the healthcare community

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Eligible for registration with College of Nurses in Ontario
  • Master's Degree in Nursing and/or related field preferred
  • 35 years current related clinical experience.
  • Demonstrated initiative and leadership in a clinical setting will be considered an asset.
  • Certification in adult education or instructional design or equivalent of education and experience
  • Canadian Nurses Association Certification in specialty where applicable (preferred).
  • Knowledge of adult education principles and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of clinical nursing practice, and professional standards.
  • Ability to assess and interpret educational and professional developmental needs.
  • Ability to develop, implements, and evaluate clinical education methodologies and assessment instruments.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement short and longrange goals.
  • Skill in organizing resources, analyzing and solving problems, establishing priorities and making evaluative judgments.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance to patientcare staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution skills
  • Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demand will vary dependent on the specific unit or service. The incumbent will be required to meet the physical demands described for that unit of services.
