Key Accountabilities

  • Provide product taxation support for crossborder private markets investment products and product platforms.
  • Work closely with investment law team and outside counsel in the development of investment structure, and fund documentation and address all tax issues associated with each phase of the fund life cycle.
  • Provide tax advice and drafting assistance to personnel in the Company's business, including legal, finance and accounting functions to support the preparation of prospectuses, marketing materials, and other customer disclosures.
  • Provide expert tax advice on proposed investments and the optimization of acquisition/investment structure.
  • Review prospectuses, offering memorandums and term sheets, and address technical tax implications of investment terms.
  • Manage domestic and foreign tax exposure to increase aftertax return for the Company and its investment products and mitigate the effects of double or excessive taxation.
  • Address Canadian and foreign tax implications of various investment activities, including acquisition planning, postacquisition restructuring, and exit/liquidation strategies; and advise Company tax compliance personnel on such implications.
  • Work closely with tax professionals in North America and Asia, external advisors and coinvestors; safeguard the Company's investment interests.
  • Evaluate crossborder tax implications for the Company and its clients of investment activities and recommend appropriate operational models to minimize tax exposures.
  • Evaluate tax issues associated with Treasury and other corporate initiatives, drawing on indepth understanding of tax rules and experience with different innovative financial instruments/arrangements, provide tax solutions in areas with significant technical uncertainties within accounting, capital and regulatory framework
  • Advise the Company of investmentrelated tax risks; assess and report to the appropriate Company officers on whether the risks are appropriately identified, assessed, and monitored.
  • Keep abreast of developments in tax legislation and evaluate their impact on existing investment strategies and operations.
  • Zealously and ethically advocate for the best interests of the Company in all matters and assignments.

What we are looking for

  • Seven or more years of Canadian and international tax experience in either private practice or inhouse setting, or a combination of both. Ideally, the inhouse experience will be in a financial services organization.
  • Knowledge of financial institutions and investment products.
  • Experience resolving technical tax issues from a business perspective, and the ability to distill complex issues and communicate key concepts in a comprehensive manner to members of the business.
  • Knowledge of crossborder tax issues and u nderstanding of tax compliance matters.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects with competing and changing priorities. The timing of acquisition projects can be unpredictable and the time to commercialize new products is crucial for the Company's competitiveness in the market.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex structures and products with attention to detail.
  • CPA/CA designation, and/or JD/LLB and called to the bar in the applicable jurisdiction.
