THE OPPORTUNITY


The Operator - Roads is responsible to operate all vehicles and equipment in accomplishing the operations and maintenance tasks assigned in delivering the prescribed programs and services in the Roads section of the City.

Depending on the season, this positions duties and responsibilities will vary. Shift work (days, evening and night rotation) will be required during snow and ice control operations. Occasional on call is a requirement during the summer season. This position reports to the Manager of Roads.
This is a full-time, permanent position and is part of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE).

Probationary Rate:
$32.58 per hour


Base Rate:
$33.54 per hour


Developmental Rate:
$34.30 per hour


Qualified Rate:
$35.25 per hour


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Roads Maintenance and Operations
  • Operate diverse vehicles and equipment in a safe and skillful manner to complete assigned tasks.
  • Perform all assigned tasks in roadway snow and ice control operations.
  • Repair and replacement of city sidewalks.
  • Maintenance of traffic control devices including traffic signs and traffic lights.
  • Perform asphalt repair and maintenance.
  • Client Relations
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing working relationship with vendors, contractors and various City departments.
  • Determine appropriate responses and required assistance to address emergent issues encountered.
  • Monitor contractors to ensure they are working safely and work is to the City's specifications.
  • Other Duties
  • Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Provide leadership for Health and Safety by making every reasonable effort to ensure the health and safety of staff within the section.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
  • Complete training and development provided to improve or increase individual competencies related to position responsibilities.
  • Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the values we live by.
  • Perform other jobrelated duties.
  • May provide back up for peer group Operator Utilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS:


  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Alberta Class 3Q Motor Vehicle Operator's License with air endorsement.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience in the operation of various equipment.
  • Must possess the physical strength and dexterity to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions.
  • Strong customer service orientation and the ability to build positive, productive business relationships.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

ASSET
QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Grader experience.
  • Certifications and training in equipment operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must obtain a satisfactory review of a threeyear Driver's Abstract.
  • Ability to lift 23kg (50lbs).
