Compensation Range

$4, $6,754.00 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position.

The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position.

In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary


The Business Analyst I consults with users to carry out business process assessments in an effort to align business initiatives with information technology solutions.

The Business Analyst I provides support in the areas of requirements definition, business process analysis and design, data, functional specifications for integrations and configuration, implementation, testing, training and documentation.

Organizational Status

Work Performed

Specific Duties:

  • Provides advice on information technology improvements, services, policies and procedures.
  • Performs analysis and identification of requirements for data, reporting and integrations.-
  • Develops user acceptance tests to ensure correctness of business functionality is maintained.
  • Prepares and maintains documentation in accordance with prescribed standards.-
  • Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of the university's technical and business environment.
  • Builds and maintains good working relationships with project teams, business analyst peers, business users, stakeholders, and vendors.
  • Analyses the impacts of proposed changes to technology services and or processes within the UBC community.

Core Duties:

  • Liaises with users to identify and communicate technical issues, and resolve problems.
  • Documents business requirements and the definition of business rules.
  • Prepares functional, system and program specifications.
  • Develops test cases and validates test results during user acceptance testing and system acceptance testing stages. Typically performs functional testing.
  • Investigates, resolves and/or escalates problems.
  • May provide input to project status reports.
  • Participates in the assessment of new technology to support business goals.
  • Maintains appropriate professional designations and uptodate knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement


Decisions and actions taken by the Business Analyst I will have a direct impact on how efficiently and effectively the systems and processes will perform and function.

Errors in judgment, poor analysis, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect and adversely impact the university community, affecting up to tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff, and could result in lost productivity, funding and revenue.

Supervision Received

The Business Analyst I reports directly and works under general direction of the Associate Director, SHCS IT.

Strategic or day-to-day direction on work performed may also be provided by other IT team members including Team Leads, Systems Managers and Director, SHCS IT.

Must be able to work independently as well as contribute actively and collaborate openly as a team member.

Supervision Given

This position has no direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of one year of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- Experience in software implementation projects in a business analyst role is preferred.- Knowledge of data analysis and data modeling (conceptual, logical).- Knowledge of writing documentation, reports, use cases, business process diagrams for business users and business owners.- Effective and methodical troubleshooting skills.- Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.
