The Opportunity
Big Cove YMCA Camp is a residential summer camp for children aged 6-16 located in Sutherlands River, Nova Scotia. Big Cove is the oldest residential camp in Canada, founded by the YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth in 1889.

At camp, we believe that our exciting programs and dedicated staff are truly the pinnacle of the Big Cove Camp experience.

Our staff are not only leaders but friends, teachers and role models to all of our campers.

Camp staff members are a dedicated group of responsible young adults carefully selected for their character, maturity, skills and sincere interest in the growth and development of youth.


The Canoe Specialist will help in facilitating the Big Cove Canoe Program in all areas (interest groups, cabin programs, Leadership) throughout the summer.

They should have a few years of experience canoeing in various environments. Certifications such as Paddle Canada or others would be an asset. The Canoe Specialist will also act as the Assistant Waterfront Director and assist with facilitating waterfront programs where needed. The Canoe Specialist may be required to fill in other areas of camp as needed. This position resides on site during the camp season.


Your Qualifications

  • Must be 19 years of age by December 31, 202
  • A minimum of three years working at a summer camp or related experience
  • Minimum qualifications: NLS, Standard First Aid and CPR-C, Swimming Instructor's Certificate, Canadian Boating License, WHIMIS, Paddle Canada
  • Recommended qualifications: Waterfront or beach NLS, Lifesaving Instructor certification (LSI), Paddle Canada Instructor levels, Class 4 Driver's License
