Highlights of the jobEPCOR is seeking a dedicated and experienced leader to take on the role of
Manager, External Communications. This full-time, permanent position works out of our Edmonton-based headquarters and focuses on innovative communications strategies that build and protect our growing brand across North America.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, this position leads the planning and execution of proactive and reactive communications strategies through a combination of team, cross-functional, and contracted resources.
The Manager, External Communications is accountable for communications programs focused on media relations, issues management, profile building, external reporting, and corporate events and announcements.
What you'd be responsible forPlanning & Execution
- Contributing to the Public & Government Affairs (P&GA) annual plan through identification of external corporate communications objectives and priorities.
- Anticipating challenges and obstacles; identifying opportunities; and developing solutions to deliver on plans and ensure annual targets are met.
- Developing proactive communications strategies to positively position EPCOR as a leader in the industry and for its commitment to environmental and corporate sustainability.
- Leading and overseeing the development of corporate communications materials to support various projects, initiatives and events, including: speaking points, presentations, news media materials, reports, briefings, social media posts, etc.
- Reviewing and refining processes for coordination of the crossfunctional 24/7 Media Oncall Team, including processes on scheduling, delivery and updating of the Media Oncall Guide.
- Ensuring effective communications support for the Corporate Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) during emergencies and participating in related emergency exercises.
- Identifying the budget, resources, and staff required to deliver on External Communications plans.
Operational Excellence
- Monitoring the external environment and team performance, ensuring effective collaboration across business lines, and continuous improvement in service delivery.
- Managing public issues in ways that mitigate reputational risk.
- Establishing and maintaining processes for regular tracking and reporting on external communications enquiries and responses, earned news media, social media attention, and the assessment of all coverage.
- Adhering to processes, procedures and standards, and accuracy of information being disseminated about the organization.
Relationships
& Collaboration
- Building and maintaining external relationships with stakeholders, industry partners, peers, and media representatives to effectively respond to enquiries, manage issues and pursue opportunities to grow EPCOR's brand.
- Consulting with customers, stakeholders and colleagues to create understanding and resolve issues or concerns.
Talent
- Overseeing the coordination of media spokesperson training, delivered through internal and external training programs.
- Providing coaching and support, and holding employees accountable for achieving results and demonstrating required behaviours.
- A Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Journalism or Business; a general business or liberal arts education, or a diplomalevel education combined with relevant work experience is required.
- 8+ years of experience in the communications field, specifically external communications.
- A reputation as a solid team leader and collaborator, who steps up to tackle the challenging issues, is driven to find innovative approaches and solutions, and is focused on creating a positive work culture that respects and recognizes team members.
- An ability to manage highprofile issues within a complex organization; developing and executing strategies to protect and grow brand and reputation.
- Experience in developing communications, public relations, and influencer strategies that optimize earned media, social media attention, and partnerships; as well as developing related stakeholder communications materials.
- A proven track record of delivering effective, measurable communications programs that achieve or exceed business results.
- Experience in developing and executing crisis/emergency communications plans.
- A strong understanding of the external environment and target audiences.
- Advanced skills in writing and editing communications; product reviewing, editing, and proofreading; speaking and presenting publicly; project management; facilitating buyin; managing conflicting priorities; and remaining calm under pressure.
- An understanding of government policy, political dynamics, regulatory frameworks, privacy legislation, and the utility sector is an asset.
