About Canucks Autism Network

Canucks Autism Network (CAN) is a charitable organization dedicated to providing programs for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, while promoting acceptance and inclusion through community engagement and training initiatives across BC.

Our vision is for every individual on the autism spectrum to be understood, accepted, and supported in all community spaces.


We engage a workforce of over 200 volunteers and 450 frontline staff to deliver programs for children, youth, and adults on the spectrum in communities across British Columbia.

Since its inception in 2008, CAN has directly impacted over 8,000 members on the autism spectrum.


Position Purpose
The Hockey Tournament Coordinator will, with the support from the Lower Mainland Program Coordinator, coordinate the day-to-day planning, organizing and execution of the 2023 Provincial Adapted Hockey Tournament to be hosted by CAN (April 1, Reporting into the Lower Mainland Program Coordinator, this person is ultimately responsible for onsite planning logistics, budget management, partnership coordinator, staff and volunteer management, material preparation and communication with all relevant parties.


Key Functions

Event Planning and Implementation

  • Provide onsite leadership and assist in the planning and delivery of the
  • Coordinator event logistics, operations, setup, take down and provide onsite
  • Be an ambassador for CAN leading up to and at the event with all participants and
  • Work with HR Team to recruit and train volunteers for event
  • Work closely with marketing team to create marketing materials for the event such as flyers, signage, and social media posts.
  • Work closely with the development team on the promotion and tracking of peertopeer fundraising activities associated with the event.
  • Ensure event plans conform to established timelines and budgetary
  • Respond to inquired from event attendees, vendors and
  • Conduct postevent feedback surveys, coordinator postevent debrief meeting(s), and produce postevent report for management.
  • Perform a variety of project administrative duties, including drafting reports, filing, creating presentations, contacting various event stakeholders, relaying information, and data entry.
  • Source, order and manage inventory of all CAN merchandise (for sale and for internal use).
  • Ensure a friendly and supportive atmosphere is maintained by working in collaboration with parents and staff members to develop appropriate strategies to support program
  • Ensure the health and safety needs of program participants and event attendees, and that all health and safety issues are dealt with immediately and appropriately, and correct procedures are followed for administering first aid.
  • Supervise the equipment and supplies, maintaining that all equipment is in good working order prior to usage.
  • Ensure that participant confidentiality is maintained in all communications, and enforce policies related to participant confidentiality onsite (e.g., photo consent, etc.)
  • Report on a regular basis to Program regarding issues of need and/or

General

  • Communicate the mission, vision, values and operating principles of the organization to program staff, volunteers and other stakeholders.
  • Attend regular inperson and teleconference meetings including: weekly checkin meetings with Program Coordinator.

Education & Experience

  • Some postsecondary education in Communications, Marketing, Project Management or related field.
  • Experienced in assisting with the planning and organization of events.
  • Direct practical experience conducting administrative tasks (such as, reception, customer service, word processing, filing and organizing data, etc.)
  • Experience working with children and youth in and adaptive sport and recreation setting.
  • Valid BC Driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in staff/volunteer supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to appropriately deal with a number of different target audiences (i.e. participants, parents, staff, volunteers, community stakeholders, funders, facilities, etc.)
  • Computer skills with ability to use full suite of MS Office software, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Previous experience program and event planning.
  • Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic, complex environment and organize time and workload effectively.
  • Working knowledge of current local sport, recreation and community leisure trends.
  • Passionate about Canucks Autism Network and its values.
