Description
The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc. requires Personal Care Assistants (PCAs) for our Windsor and Erie Shores Residences. These roles are full time summer contracts (approximately 12 weeks).

Job Summary:


The Personal Care Assistant (PCA) of the Hospice Windsor and Erie Shores Residences will support and work towards achieving the strategic directions set out by the Board of Directors of the Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc.


They will function in a supportive capacity to Hospice patients, family members and caregivers by working with the Hospice Staff and Volunteers caring for the residents.

This may involve assisting the patient to sit up, supporting a patient while bed bath/bath/shower are given, assisting in changing non-complex dressings, changing bed linens etc., assisting to lift, turn from side to side or transfer patients.

The PCA works alongside and takes direction or guidance from the Hospice Staff.

Communication is key. PCAs are considered part of the inter-disciplinary team and play an integral role in patient and caregiver support.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Pair up with the PSW or other staff member to provide care to residents. The PCA will take direction and lead from the staff to work as a team.
  • May be required to provide care for residents independently within their abilities and with direction from staff.
  • When coming on shift, consult with Hospice Staff for any updates concerning resident care. This may include listening to shift report with the staff. It is important that the PCA know each resident and details specific to their care. This enables them to be prepared for any care they are asked to assist with. It also prepares the PCA to communicate effectively with each resident and to be aware of any specific needs or issues to provide quality care.

Personal Care Duties:

  • Assisting with the bathing of residents.
  • Assisting with lifting, moving, and repositioning residents.
  • Assisting with Pericare, including assisting with cleaning following incontinence or use of toilet/commode.
  • Assisting residents onto a commode/toilet.
  • Assisting with the use of the shower.
  • Providing oral care.
  • Assisting residents with getting dressed or helping them with their nighttime routine.
  • Doing laundry for the residence, including bedding and residents' clothing.
  • Assisting with carbolizing resident rooms.
  • Removing garbage from rooms, light cleaning, opening/closing the blinds, making sure there are clean towels in the cupboard.
  • Stocking care carts.
  • Reporting any symptoms or concerns to Hospice Staff.
  • Assisting Kitchen Volunteer with delivering meals, feeding residents and collecting dishes from residents' rooms.
  • Assisting Kitchen Volunteers with taking orders, helping prepare meals and kitchen clean up as required.
  • Friendly visiting, sitting with residents and families to offer support and comfort including reading to residents, playing cards or talking with them.
  • Providing respite for residents' families if they are away from the residence.

Accountabilities:


  • Accountable to the Manager of the Hospice Residence, Windsor and Erie Shores.
  • Accountable for adhering to the Hospice policies, professional behaviour, and for ensuring a review of such as required.

Requirements:


  • Technical:_
  • Time management and ability to work independently while following instructions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Physical ability and stamina to provide care to residents throughout a 412 hour shift
  • Education_:
  • Working towards a Nursing degree or PSW diploma is preferred.
  • Previous experience volunteering with Hospice is preferred.
