Northern Strands is currently recruiting to fulfill the role of
Health, Safety & Environment Manager.

This position provides leadership and strategic direction for health, safety, and environmental programs for the Northern Strands Group of Companies.

Working closely with Division Managers, Supervisors, Occupational Health & Safety Committees, and employees, the HSE Manager designs, maintains, and updates systems for the adherence and reporting of compliance for internal and external safety policies.

This is a Safety Sensitive position is conditional to completing and passing a Drug & Alcohol test.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Promote and advance the Health & Safety culture within the organization
  • Lead and manage the development, implementation and administration of the Health, Safety and Environmental programs, including policy development and employee training
  • Assist the Leadership Team in the development, management, and monitoring of HSE performance
  • Monitor and audit HSE systems, processes and procedures for accreditation and compliance with statutory regulations, contractual requirements and sound industry practice including but not limited to ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, COR, ISNet and WCB standing
  • Coordinate the scheduling of internal and external audits, compile audit reports and work with external auditors to ensure compliance for all health, safety, and environmental accreditations
  • Act as the primary DER pertaining to all Drug and Alcohol related issues/concerns as per the corporate D&A policy
  • Review health and safety statistical data, identify trends, recommend corrective actions and establish benchmarks for achieving safety performance
  • Facilitate investigations and the communication process on all HSE incidents both internally and externally, including ensuring corrective actions are documented and completed
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and tours for both the Occupational Health and Safety Committee and Environmental Committee throughout the Group of Companies providing leadership and guidance as required
  • Develop, implement, and monitor and/or lead internal, external and worksite health and safety programs
  • Oversee the development, and delivery for Health Safety and Environmental Training Programs
  • Monitor the coordination and scheduling of training of employees throughout the Health and Safety Department
  • Oversee Health and Safety seminars including statutory requirements for respirator fit testing, air quality monitoring, decibel level surveys, and hearing conservation programs
  • Participate and represent the Group of Companies in external safety associations (i.e., SMA) and other professional associations (i.e., CIM) with a focus on establishing a network of contacts, developing business/work opportunities, and ensuring the Group of Companies remains current on safety regulations and local trends
  • Advise worksite personnel of acceptable levels of job site safety and regulatory compliance
  • Participate in client‐directed incident investigations and safety meetings
  • Review and audit site safety programs
  • Manage and monitor all aspects of Return‐to‐Work programs
  • Oversee maintenance of safety‐related certifications for the Group of Companies
  • Appropriate management of incidents as it relates to TRIF, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a recognized Safety designation such as a Construction Safety Officer (CSO) or Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
  • Extensive experience in construction or mining, preference in an underground environment. Related Trades certificate and Supervisory experience an asset
  • Minimum of five years' experience working as a Health and Safety professional within a manufacturing, project, and/or mining environment
  • In‐depth knowledge of Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and Saskatchewan Mining Regulations
  • Auditor experience / credentials within ISO, COR or relevant areas would be an asset
