SNOLAB is an international facility for world-class underground physics research and has an expanding
program in astroparticle physics and underground science. Located in an air-conditioned clean room 2
km underground in the Vale Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, with a suite of surface facilities and
laboratories, SNOLAB is currently preparing for the next generation of experiments focusing on neutrino
studies and the search for galactic dark matter.


The Position
The Manager of the SNOLAB Project Management Office develops and manages a
professional Project Management Office (PMO) to support the Director of Research
and the other divisional directors, in the development of the SNOLAB facilities and
experimental projects. Using the SNOLAB Project Lifecycle framework, the PMO
Manager will establish and maintain project management procedures, workflows,
and documentation standards in alignment with current PMI methodologies,
SNOLAB pan-divisional requirements, and industry best practices. Additionally, the
PMO manager will support the Program Oversight Group (POG) by reporting a
summary of the project portfolio. The PMO Manager will recruit, train, develop, and
manage all PMO staff and allocate these resources appropriately to assigned
projects based on established priorities.


Responsibilities include:


  • Manages the PMO group to effectively deliver SNOLAB internal and external
projects within the framework of the SNOLAB Project Lifecycle process.

  • Recruit, train, develop, manage, mentor and support all PMO staff.
  • Coordinate with support and services from other SNOLAB groups as needed:
engineering, scientific support, operations and logistics, finance, HR, purchasing and
general administration.

  • Monitor and manage resources within the PMO for timely and successful delivery of
projects.

  • Create project management procedures, workflows and documentation standards
that are effective for the type of facility and experiment projects unique to SNOLAB,
eg. documentation templates, WBSs, schedules, budgets and basis of cost, earned
- value management, project management and execution plans, change management,
cost control, reporting and communication standards etc.

  • Provide oversight of projects and support as needed for staff to ensure projects are
well managed within the SNOLAB Project Lifecycle process.

  • Responsible for managing the PMO budget (travel, training, supplies etc.)
  • Responsible for maintaining data, summary of the projects portfolio, and established
KPIs and reporting these to POG, including chairing the POG projects meetings.

  • Reporting and communicating PMO activities and projects' status as required and
appropriate, such as to the SNOLAB directors, SNOLABI board, PANDIV, EAC,
SEF, experiment collaborations, funding agencies, and other external bodies as
directed, etc.

  • Participate in SNOLAB or external project reviews as required.
  • Ensuring quality standards of SNOLAB using QA processes.
  • Establishing and maintaining Health and Safety culture within the PMO and ensuring
staff adherence to all SNOLAB policies and procedures.

  • Provides leadership, training, and support to PMO staff, establishes clear
expectations, communicating specific performance feedback and providing timely
and thorough performance evaluations.

  • Act as the delegate for the Director of Research as required.

Criteria

Education:


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; Business, Engineering or Science discipline
such as physics, engineering physics, chemistry, or a closely related discipline is
required;


Experience:


  • Experience as a project manager or demonstrated ability to lead project planning and
delivery;

  • Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary teams in a project or scientific
setting;

  • Experience creating and implementing PM processes, procedures, workflows, and
documentation a considerable asset;

  • Experience working within a research environment is a strong asset;
  • Experience using earned value management, cost and change control is an asset.
**Salary Range ($113,316-$132,957)
Salary will be determined by qualifications and experience and includes an attractive
benefits package. Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with SNOLAB
policies. To meet operational needs, shift work may be required.
