This position will have primary responsibility for negotiation and management of favorable energy purchase contracts, primarily for electric power and/or natural gas for Canadian facilities, and providing analytical, market intelligence, and other support activities required to improve the competitiveness and meet the energy supply needs of Air Products' various new and potential plants in North America.

The Energy Manager position will have primary responsibility and accountability for:

  • Negotiation and management of electricity and natural gas supply contracts including arranging for transportation and interfacing with key internal and external contracts for all Canadian assets.
  • Providing expert energy consulting to business areas impacted by primary energy market developments. Provide regular forecasting of natural gas and power with market trends per the needs of the business area.
  • Daily coordination with the supply chain organization to optimize plant operations within the energy contract structure to balance Air Products' business needs and improve profits.
  • Coordinating with sales, marketing, and finance to ensure the structure and management of Air Products' energy costs are competitive.
  • Risk management of Air Products' energy supply contracts.
  • Participating in industrial energy lobbying groups as a leader/strong influencer.
  • Interacting and establishing productive relationships at multiple levels of management with energy suppliers, energy marketers, public utilities, multiple municipal provincial regulatory jurisdictions and grid operators.
  • Assisting in the physical interconnection of new power and natural gas supply while minimizing capital costs and maintaining high reliability.
  • Responding to ad hoc requests for energy information and analysis.
  • Working with the local distribution companies to resolve and improve power and natural gas reliability issues.
  • Selecting/managing outside consultants/legal support for purposes of energy purchases and regulatory intervention.
  • Conducting RFPs, evaluating the results, and recommending the best evaluated provider.
  • Owning the negotiation of the necessary power and natural gas supply contracts with the selected supplier.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Energy, Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business
years minimum experience in electricity and natural gas energy markets, preferably on the buy side

  • 5 years' experience in Canada natural gas and electricity regulatory processes is helpful.
  • Selfdisciplined, selfmotivated, demonstrated ability to work effectively with mínimal direction, and good analytical skills with capability of detailed analysis of a complex nature and able to provide summary/recommendations regarding findings.
  • Demonstrated prioritization, planning, and followup skills in a multitasking environment.
  • Demonstrated commercial skills with understanding of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Capable of handling detailed and complex contract negotiations
