Kennedy House (KH) is a not-for-profit organization with a long-standing dedication to providing exceptional personalized care for youth in the Greater Toronto Area for over 50 years.

KH started with an initial family-like group home in 1971 and currently operates several residential and community-based programs, for marginalized and at-risk youth, including:


  • One residential program for adolescents in care;
  • Three residential programs for youth and young adults living with developmental disabilities;
  • A Day Treatment school program for youth struggling in the typical school setting;
  • Kennedy House Youth Centre, a secure custody facility for male youth experiencing conflict with the law;
  • Bailiff services to safely and securely transport youth experiencing conflict with the law;
  • Kennedy House After School Program for children aged 413 in underserved communities throughout Scarborough; and
  • Kennedy House Youth Shelter, for youth aged 1624 experiencing homelessness.

***The primary responsibility of the Junior Maintenance Worker is to ensure the daily maintenance requirements of the grounds, building interiors and exteriors are performed. This includes mowing and trimming of lawns, trimming hedges and bushes, planting and maintaining front garden and raised beds, snow clearing; including all driveways, parking lots, common areas and exits, salt as needed. Daily waste and recycling removal, light and heavy cleaning duties as scheduled including interior and exterior windows and glass as well as daily grounds, building and perimeter checks are an essential function of the position. Inspection and basic repair of the fencing including hanging and maintaining privacy screen.

Additional duties may include:
repairs to a variety of items found in the building i.e. furniture, loose trim, flooring, hanging pictures, appliances, etc.

as skills permit; completing errands for the Ajax facility as directed by the Superintendent and/or designate; occasional moving of boxes, small items of furniture, etc.; completing small painting jobs and other special projects from time to time.

Occasional afterhours/weekends/holidays response to emergencies with the physical plant, scheduled duties or snow/ice clearing is expected and required.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Daily check of all rooms in the main facility and garage
  • Daily grounds check including perimeter fencing
  • Weekly roof top check
  • Cut and trim lawns to community standards; fertilize as needed
  • Clip hedges and bushes and maintain trees and all other plants on the property as required
  • Plant and maintain front garden and containers
  • Snow clearing and salting of all building exits and walkways, roads and paved areas
  • Maintain fencing, gates, antiscale and privacy mesh
  • Removal of waste and recyclables from all areas of the facility
  • Sort and transport recyclables, hazardous wastes (paint, oil) to transfer station
  • Perform cleanup of facility: sweep, mop, polish, refinish resilient floors, vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas, dust, wash walls, wipe surfaces
  • Wash windows, interior and exterior
  • Clean all hallways, washrooms, kitchenettes, mantraps and other general rooms
  • Heavy cleaning duties in the units and other areas used by clients
  • Clean light fixtures and change bulbs and tubes
  • Cleaning of facility vehicles: vacuum, wash and perform fluid level checks
  • Complete inventories of tools, equipment, supplies and materials
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools including power lawn equipment and snowplows
  • Maintenance (fluid and safety checks) and cleaning of tractors, implements and other related equipment to ensure reliability
  • Perform minor repairs as required
  • Attend and participate in meetings as required
  • Complete all necessary reports and checklists related to the department
  • Respond to any emergency situations regarding the physical plant, assess the situation and assist in problem resolution
  • Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, follow the law and workplace specific health and safety policies and procedures; work and act in a way that won't hurt them or any other employee or resident; report any hazard they find in the workplace to their supervisor
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or GED is required
  • Building trades' certificate, or equivalent, considered an asset

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in facility maintenance or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the skills knowledge and ability necessary to perform the tasks
  • Previous experience working in a correctional facility
