August 2014 to Current: On permanent disability due to degenerative disc disorder.  

February 2010 to August 2014: Security Officer, Downtown, Vancouver

Work as a community-orientated night guard for Our Community Security, a project company of the Portland Hotel Society. OCS provides socially-aware security services at the high-profile Woodward’s development and other sites in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

August 2008 to December 2009: ESL teacher, various contracts, Vancouver BC.

Taught ESL part-time to Chinese immigrants and international students while attending a Master’s program at UBC full-time.

Sept. 2006 to July 2008 Dandii Boru School, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Taught students in Ethiopia grade 9 and 10 English.  Followed the national curriculum, filling perceived gaps with creative exercises and a self-developed writing curriculum.  Taught classes of over forty students covering all aspects of English Language.  Counseled students on issues such as substance abuse, sexual conduct and poverty management.  Organized and chaperoned various school trips.  Edited, published and organized school newsletter.  Created a program to improve students' IELTS scores.

Feb. 2005 to July 2006  Dari International Language School, Sokcho, South Korea  

Taught students ranging from six years old to adult professionals.  Designed and followed a tailor-made curriculum for each class.  Based lessons for students on high-frequency of speaking per student and supported by equal parts writing and reading.  

May 1999-December 2004

Worked in the lucrative seasonal forestry industry in Western Canada as a treeplanter and fire fighter in the summers from 1999 to 2004.  In the winters pursued a career as a musician and a writer while working part-time as a landscaper.  Produced two short independent films and one self-engineered album.  Learned the basics of film and sound editing, using programs such as Cakewalk, Pro Tools, and Final Cut Pro. 

2008-2009 Second-Year M.F.A. student at UBC Workshops in Fiction, Non-fiction and Writing for Children. Have completed all the course work and am in the process of finishing my thesis.

1998-2002 B.F.A. in History and Creative Writing.   Courses in history and creative writing, English literature, technical writing, drama, French and German language.  Consummate work-shopper and experienced reader and critic. Specialized in fiction and non-fiction but did numerous workshops for film, stage, poetry and radio plays.
