About Amal Jina:

I have 10+ years in Energy Management plus 6 years in the Aerospace sectors at various institutions, Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, certified in Energy Studies from the University of Toronto. My work experience involves providing technical expertise and innovative strategies Nationally in Canada, and leading projects focused on driving down energy use intensity and emissions, strategically selecting buildings by province to lower emissions serve the responsibilities of this position. I have a passion for energy management and sustainability, am familiar with issues surrounding climate change, and have working knowledge of the GHG Protocol and applied knowledge of carbon accounting and measurement.

Tasks I am experienced in as the sole National Energy manager are developing strategies and targets, the 5 yr plan YOY and path to 2040 on emissions reduction, creating business cases, program plans, budgeting and delivering execution milestones, and determining impacts of current strategies align with this position. In addition, I budget and forecast utilities nationally, a portfolio of approx. $160 Million. The time spent at my current position have allowed me to hone my abilities and take on more much more challenging opportunities. WORLDS LARGEST RETAILER HAVING LEADERSHIP IN SUSTAINABILITY AND ENSURING REDUCED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT, GLOBALLY

  • Defining the energy strategy and plan, outlining the projects required for a timeline of 5 yrs in attaining Zero GHG emissions by 2040, with the cost, energy and emission savings along with a timeline of execution.  
  • Create budget and forecasts for National utility consumption and costs, taking into consideration the weather, and fluctuations that would affect our consumption and rates, a portfolio of over $160 million.
  • Seeking out innovative energy strategies in the next 3 years have revealed a savings of $10M in utility costs, aligned to the budget allotted, and emissions savings for 2023 are projected to be 14,000 Metric Tonnes. 
  • Manage projects and develop energy management business plans across the entire project lifecycle including needs analysis, NPV, IRR, finalizing execution requirements and implementation with maintenance benefits.
  • Implemented optimization of HVAC, Refrigeration, and lighting – as a result, the Energy use intensity decreased from 28.2 kWh/ft2 to 25.1 kWh/ft2 
  • Increasing Preventative Maintenance awareness and refining the HVAC PM plan to include strategies that will increase equipment efficiency, reduce work orders and increase operating revenue.
  • Generate revenue via management of consultants for incentives, averaging $400k per year.
  • Automated the data acquisition process for electricity, gas and water for about 20% of our sites, to facilitate easier access for the GHG Emissions Report and for accurate reporting using SoFi – Sustainability Software
  • Involvement with Walmart International on several of their rollouts eg SoFi where I had to validate the use of the tools used in the software, such as weather normalization and forecasting
  • Management of Engineering Energy Consultants, RWDI, Jupiter and Footprint who are enabling our Path to a Zero Carbon future. 
  • An active volunteer of Association of Energy Engineers, currently on the Board of Directors. Involved in a panel discussion focused on Women in Energy, have been showcased on Chatelaine, TikTok, you-tube in helping to build bright futures for Girls in STEM, with Polaris Transformation and Women in Retail at Walmart.

SHOPPERS DRUG MART: National Energy Manager                                                                              Apr 2017 – Oct 2018 

  • Developed, coordinated, and executed strategies and policies to reduce energy consumption.
  • Executed the Business Refrigeration Incentive program, available to stores with a demand consumption under 250kW, savings incurred from this project will be $1,250,000 in the first year and $750,000 annually.
  • Had national ownership of HVAC and Refrigeration maintenance requests, for proposals of work to be done at 1400 stores. Provide specific technical expertise and actionable advice to support Shoppers Drug Mart. 
  • Incurred a savings of over $500,000 in maintenance costs already by redirecting requests that were normally carried out, evaluating and determining their necessity.

CANADA’S FOOD AND PHARMACY LEADER WITH A STRONG FOOTHOLD IN GREENING THE COMMUNITY

  • Acquired incentives of over $600,000 in the parking light retro fit project in Ontario, with direct management and processing of the incentive applications, a savings of an additional $100,000 has been realized.
  • Initiated projects which are currently under investigation including HVAC optimization, Voltage reducing transformers and Demand Control Ventilation, which will amount to 5-10% of savings.
  • Managing projects such as security interfacing with lighting, to ensure that the lights are out automatically whenever no occupancy is detected within the store.
  • Constantly attending external Energy Management training events, furthering education (C.E.M. course), researching and remaining updated with new software and trends in the energy field.

  • Recipient and winner of the Capital Management Team Award for Energy Management for the fiscal year 2014-2015 with savings of over 1 million per year.
  • Lead developer for energy saving projects including scheduling of HVAC systems, activation of daylight sensors, scheduling lighting, computers and temperature optimization within the facility.
  • Responsible for the investigation of energy conservation strategies to reduce energy consumption, delivery of proposal presentations, coordination and execution of the project, and the final conclusive report.
  • Track power consumption using Power Xpert, energy consumption through EnergyCAP and Enmax and lighting power consumption via Encelium, Building Management System to obtain operating trends.
  • Continually researching and carrying out analysis into methods to improve operating efficiency of systems.

  • Minimized the energy consumption down to as much as 60% of the energy use of a building complying with the Model National Energy Code for Buildings-1997, incorporating high efficiency systems such as HVAC, lighting, orientation, calculations and design strategies for energy conservation using e-Quest.
