About Anca Ristea:

I have over twenty years of relevant experience in the full accounting cycle, including financial analysis, reporting and internal control. I offer a solid accounting background and education, as well as practical experience in management and administration.

For the last 21 years, I worked in accounting at The University of British Columbia, where I was exposed to all aspects of the full accounting cycle, including budgeting, forecasting, overseeing accounts payable/receivable, reconciling bank balances, analyzing various general ledger accounts.  Also, I have done extensive work in assisting in the financial management of over 100 projects/grants, analyzing and investigating any unusual activity and balances, and assisting with month-end and year-end working paper preparation.

As Finance Manager my role was to manage all aspects of financial reporting, budgeting, human resources of student body employed by the department and overall day to day finance operations.  

I am a forward, creative thinker who can articulate a strategy as well as demonstrate an understanding of the link between one’s own job responsibilities and overall organizational goals and needs. I possess excellent interpersonal skills and thoroughly enjoy working with others as a member of a team; however, I am also comfortable with self-directed projects.

Experience

As a Finance Manager     

  • Developed, coordinated, implemented, and monitored the Varsity operating, specific purpose, scholarship and awards budget by analysing the overall effectiveness and efficiency in all units.
  • Analysed and monitored the above, on an individual and rollup basis; Examined relationships between budget and actual financial data and determines reasons for variances.
  • Made recommendations to improve efficiencies and accuracy in financial reports, policies, processes, and workflow of payables and receivables.
  • Evaluated and investigated any unusual account activity and balances. Ensured that the clearing accounts are reconciled and makes recommendations as required.
  • Managed closing of year end books for Athletics and Units. Reconciled, prepared accruals, reports, and resolved discrepancies, managed.
  • Managed the department AP and AR monthly submission in accordance with the university policies and procedures, ensuring the timely collection of bad debts, reconciling the sub-ledger balances to general ledger.
  • Prepared year-end audit papers as required by the UBC External Auditor.
  • Worked with Coaches and Staff and Financial Services to prevent or resolve fiscal year end deficits; produced year to date aggregated or specific purpose reports.
  • Developed administrative policies for team travels, expenses, P-Card administration, cash per diem (Petty Cash funds) for student athletes and coaches so it will comply with overall UBC’s policies and procedures.
  • Provided financial advice, training, support and on-going assistance to Varsity Coaches and unit Administrators in the areas of expenditures, budgeting, accounting, financial matters and implications of various accounting policies and sound business practices. Interprets and advises on UBC and Athletics financial policies.
  • Provided staff training on policies and procedures, overseeing the ledgers, monthly timeline of the submission of the expenses, budgeting.
  • Assessed existing and new accounting procedures and methods and developed and implemented financial processes and internal controls to improve the efficiencies of the financial information workflow, and to increase effectiveness for better decision making.

As an Assistant Finance Manager     

  • Oversaw the full accounting cycle for the department’s accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, development, endowment, and grant accounts.
  • Analysed and investigated any unusual account activity and balances.  Followed up and made recommendations as required.
  • Ensure appropriate degree of compliance to accounting and internal controls, the integrity of financial information and the efficiencies of operations.
  • Assisted the Financial Director as required in the financial management of over 100 projects/grants.
  • Oversaw accounting procedures and reports for large special events such as the Vans Warped Tour and Arts County Fair
  • Trained Athletics staff on accounting policies and procedures
  • Ensured that all unit transactions are processed, accurate and completed within month-end deadlines.  Reviewed information received for reasonableness and ensured there is appropriate back-up information on file.
  • Ensured that clearing accounts are reconciled.
  • Worked on special financial projects as assigned by the Financial Director
