Anika Shelrud

I have recently graduated with my masters in science, my thesis research focused on furthering reproductive sciences. I have a passion for supporting underserved and underrepresented communities, and plan to do continue this work into the field of health care. Eager to engage in a community focused on patient care and evolution of systems.  

Program Manager @ College and University Bound Scholars (January 2023-May2023) @ University of Northern Colorado

• Managed College and University Bound Scholars, a free afterschool college preparatory and tutoring program for historically minoritized students. Responsibilities included: Managed a staff of 9 tutors and employees, provided educational and emotional support to students, tutored high school students in all courses—specifically STEM based, and writing and review of local and federal grant applications.
   

Graduate Research Assistant@ University of Northern Colorado (August 2020-presesnt)

• Primary cellular culture, cellular isolation, protein analysis, hormone analysis, tissue cutting and mounting, tissue staining, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, blood draws, bovine husbandry, bovine jugular blood draws, bovine transrectal ultrasonography, surgical assistant during bovine ovariectomies, RNA extraction, gene analysis
• Aided in the management and incorporation of 12 undergraduate students working in our lab

• Mentoring first generation minority student in research procedures

• Headed the Bears Supporting Bears Incentive program, promoting community within the athletic department
• Headed a Mental Health Committee, creating a space for emotional support for fellow student athletes  
• Headed the Dodgeball committee raising funds for a preventative sex trafficking organization, the Avery Center
• Headed the Community Outreach Committee, promoting connectivity between the local community and the athletic department, specifically among youth communities
• Collaborated with leaders in the Big Sky conference and NCAA to refine the NCAA constitution

• Aided undergraduate student-athletes with organization and homework during mandatory student-athlete study hall

Co-captain of the University of Northern Colorado Women’s varsity soccer team (spring 2018-spring 2019; until time of injury and medical disqualification)

• Responsibilities included: setting team norms and values, enforcing team expectations and rules, motivating teammates, maintaining team accountability, organizing team events for increased unity and cohesiveness, liaising communication between athletics staff and teammates
• Implemented a “Big-Little Bear” system, pairing senior players with incoming students
