Emmanuel Sarantonis
About Emmanuel Sarantonis:
Hi my name is Emmanuel. I obtained my Masters degree in civil engineering at University of Toronto, specializing in geotechnical engineering. I have worked in many different projects in my career, namely tailings dams and pipeline construction. I also have published and presented at the Tailings and Mine Waste Conference.
I am looking to engage in new challenges in the geotechnical engineering field and working with ambitious engineers.
Experience
Junior Geotechnical Engineer, BGC Engineering Inc. 01/2020-present
Flin Flon Tailings Impoundment System, Hudbay Minerals Inc.
- Provide site investigation support: coordinating with drillers on site, manage and process and interpret the data collected in the field through multiple databases
- Conduct CPT interpretations for subsurface conditions, tailings characterization, liquefaction triggering/susceptibility
- Update the geologic model of the area
- Analyze slope stability and establish appropriate design for safety
- Contribute to writing memos and reports
Red Chris Mine Tailings Dam, New Crest Mining Limited
- Perform construction monitoring quality control
- Observe material being placed to ensure it is within specifications (grain size, moisture, compaction efforts, etc.)
- Take samples for sieve, moisture content and proctor testing
- Test compaction efforts with nuclear densometer and account for oversize content
Pipeline projects in western Canada
- Evaluate the potential of geohazards through LIDAR imagery along the pipelines
- Monitor the settlement of roads and rail during pipeline crossing
MEng Research Project, University of Toronto, Canada 05/2019-08/2019
- Project: Parametric Study on the Effect of Assumed Residual Strength on Remediation Costs of Tailings Dams
- Create a slope stability model for a tailings dam
- Assess the impact of post-liquefaction tailings from failure surfaces computed in the model
- Evaluate the potential of toe berms and stone columns
- Optimize the cost of using toe berms and stone columns as reinforcement
Civil Engineering Intern, Journeaux Assoc., Montreal 06/2017-08/2017
- Analyze rock core samples in RQD, recovery, JRC, etc. and test them in shear and compression
- Plot and analyze inclinometer soil displacement data retrieved in situ
- Contribute to writing professional engineering reports both in English and French
