Lurlene Ogayon

I am a firm believer that there is no “I” in team but there is “e”, and so is in we. Because I am a graduating student, the stakes to be successful and make oneself useful is to go out and do something; to be surrounded by people who also do so. Here is where determination took me. So far my skills have been within meeting sales targets, quality customer service and teaching children weekly about the Bible. I learned early to be on my own but being in school will only get me to earn doubt so I would say I am more responsible in school and work than that independent to pay to move out from my parents. Studying Communication and Media Studies for four years equipped me with knowledge most respectively focused on persuasion, identifying target audiences in capitalism, research on scholarships, and more essays than my hands could count. But my most practical skill is handcrafting coffee and tea every morning at a local coffee shop. My future degree, though, prepared me to be creative in videography, filmmaking, leadership strategy, and the use of MS applications. 

Barista Trainer (August 2022 to present) The craftsmanship of a quality beverage standard is 

part of being a barista trainer that many Starbucks new employees become introduced to on their first day. My barista training qualification includes working with new hires whose age varies but mostly from the age of 22-30 years old. I was my store's leader and representative in Starbucks Community and Diversity committee from May 2020 to December 2020. My tasks include hosting fundraising in partnership with the community around our store including Oasis Dufferin and leading my team to fundraise or walk for the Annual Coldest Night of the Year in 2020. My most recent activity after being awarded the training certificate is participating in writing "notes of kindness" and donating a Personal Hygiene Kit to the Pan-Asian Partner Network (which I am a part of in our Starbucks Partner community). 

Student Call Centre for the Public Health and Computing Assistant (May 2021-Feb 2022) York University

I worked in-campus part-time on mostly evening shifts. My experience underlines handling phone calls, conducting research surveys, and assisting students with technical difficulties in accessing their student portal. Being able to work and study at my campus is rewarding because it helps me picture my future in an academic or educational institution in the future. while connecting with my fellow students and faculty members taught me professionalism beyond my years. It humbled me and definitely made me part of student bodies other than my volunteer experience as a freshman mentor.

I am graduating in June and my most relevant education is in the areas of studying communication and media from philosophical ideologies to critical analysis of media policymaking in Canada. While the hands-on part underlines designing a website through WordPress, filmmaking and business presentation making. In my 4-year study, I earned a certificate in leadership and this certificate came from attending meetings and discussions on becoming a leader – to aspire others and coach them with appropriate guidance.
