My background in golf began in the 1950s in Agincourt, Ontario, Canada. The local golf course, Tam-O-Shanter Golf Club was only a mile from my home. I started by searching for and selling golf balls to golfers. Eventually, the club professional invited me to work in the pro shop for him. By the time I was sixteen years old I'd become a cashier in the Tam pro shop.
I stayed with golf, working as a golf teacher, pro shop manager, and eventually a golf course general manager. I had earned my Canadian PGA card and a Superintendent's License while managing a golf center in Peterborough, Ontario.
In those times I learned absolutely everything about golf, golf courses, merchandising, food and beverage, golf course maintenance, irrigation systems, and even golf course planning and design.

Education
My education ended after high school. By the time I was nineteen years of age I was managing a golf course pro shop in summer, then working in bowling, curling, and kitchens, in the off season. It was because Tam-O-Shanter Golf Club by 1960 was more than a golf course. It had a public swimming pool, a 20-sheet curling rink, an 8-lane bowling alley, a full service dining room, a skating and hockey rink, and an indoor golf school.
I was a materially involved in every department at the Tam-O-Shanter Golf Club in 1960.
