Tom Hwang

I’m an economist driven by a deep curiosity about how numbers shape the world. With over four years of experience in government, including direct work with the Prime Minister’s Office, I specialize in turning complex data into actionable insights. I’m passionate about identifying patterns, whether in trade flows, labor mobility, or macroeconomic trends, and using them to guide high-stakes decisions. I thrive where rigorous analysis meets real-world impact.

Throughout my career, I’ve combined analytical rigor with a passion for solving real-world problems. At the Privy Council Office, I led national-level work on interprovincial trade and labor mobility, including building Canada’s first centralized trade data hub. At Statistics Canada, I developed predictive models to evaluate the ripple effects of major investments across sectors. In Saskatchewan, I restructured a $312M portfolio and helped redesign benefits systems with a “data-first” mindset. I’ve also shared my enthusiasm for economics in the classroom, teaching math and statistics at the university level prior to joining the public service.

I completed my M.A. in Economics at the Paris School of Economics, where I polished my knowledge in economic theory and applied analysis. Before that, I earned an Honours B.Math. (Honours in Math and Economics) from Carleton University, making the Dean’s List every year. My academic path reflects a lifelong interest in how abstract patterns, whether in equations or economies, can explain real human behavior and guide better decisions.
