The Court of Appeal for Ontario requires a lawyer to provide clear and concise legal, policy and strategic advice to the Chief Justices, the judges of the court and the Executive Legal Officer with a strong focus on operational and procedural issues.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Working in consultation with the Chief Justices, the Executive Legal Officer, other counsel in the Office and various court committees, you will:

  • Provide legal, policy and procedural advice to the Chief Justice and Associate Chief Justice of Ontario, the judges of the court, and the Executive Legal Officer with respect to court operations and best practices.
  • Conduct research on a range of complex and novel issues and prepare research memoranda for members of the judiciary and/or the Executive Legal Officer.
  • Work collaboratively with the judiciary, the Office of the Registrar/Manager of Court Operations and court staff to support the efficient progression of motions and appeals through the court process.
  • Provide legal analysis, advice and information to court staff on complex civil and criminal procedural issues, and on operational issues including filing, scheduling, hearing and disposition of motions and appeals.
  • Support court initiatives including policy development, court modernization and digital transformation.
  • Develop effective working relationships with other courts, the Ministry of the Attorney General, and other justice system stakeholders.
  • Draft correspondence to government officials, the judiciary and other court stakeholders.
Support internal and external committees, including the Civil Rules Committee.


How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:
Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario


Knowledge and Skills:


  • Proven knowledge of statutes related to the administration of justice, including the_Courts of Justice Act._
  • Proven knowledge of appellate civil and criminal rules and procedures.
  • Demonstrated analytical, legal research, problemsolving and project management skills.
  • Proven knowledge and expertise in policy development related to the justice sector.
  • Proven interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Expertise in issues management.
  • Ability to produce high quality work under demanding timelines
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and antiracism.
  • Computer proficiency, including familiarity with electronic research tools and court case management databases.
  • Experience working with judges
