Description

BGC Weston-Mount Dennis & Lawrence Heights Clubs serves children and youth in the Lawrence Heights/Weston-Mount Dennis and surrounding communities providing social, physical, educational, creative, seasonal, and community support programs.

Your role as a Basketball Camp Instructor will be to provide a safe and supportive environment for the program participants.

This program is designed for children ages 9-12 years. Program components include dance education, recreation, social activities, sports, mentoring and the arts.


Location:
John Polanyi Collegiate Institute (640 Lawrence Ave W)**
Responsibilities:
  • Plan, organize and lead a group of children in a group setting
  • Ensure that you are creating a safe and enjoyable environment for participants
  • Create and facilitate fun, creative and inclusive activities for all participants
  • Teach from beginning to intermediate levels using a variety of basketball skills and drills
  • Prepare basketball lesson plans and develop skill curriculums
  • Ensure all equipment and supplies are in safe working condition
  • Complete appropriate administrative tasks in a timely manner (i.e. attendances and head counts)
  • Developing and planning programs that meet the interests of children between the ages of 9 to 12 years
  • Encourage and motivate children to achieve their goals through engaging, encouraging, and motivating them.
  • Teach all aspects of the basketball curriculum, including techniques, theory, and team building, requiring both leadership and vision
  • Ensuring programs are safe, age/developmentallyappropriate, noncompetitive, inclusive, innovative and skilledbased in nature.
  • Help to ensure the safety and security of the members and assist in responding to critical incidents as outlined in the Club's policies and procedures
  • Participate in staff training and orientation sessions
  • Ensuring the safety and supervision of participants at all times by strictly following guidelines and procedures (i.e. head counts)
  • Dealing with conflicts and behavior management immediately using corrective techniques, as discussed in training
  • Report to, and takes direction from Supervisors
  • Maintain professional relationships with peers, members, volunteers, parents and other Club members
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings
  • Arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to scheduled shift.

Qualifications:

  • Sportsrelated Degree or similar (asset).
  • Extensive basketball skill and experience (asset).
  • Passion for basketball and teaching
  • Strong interpretive and creative thinking skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management skills, and work ethic.
  • Superb interpersonal, collaborative, and communication abilities.

Must meet all "Canada Summer Jobs" requirements including:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and

  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
  • Experience working with children 9 to 12 years old
  • Strong supervision and program planning skills
  • Good decision making and problem solving skills
  • Current First Aid and CPR training (mandatory)
  • Police Reference Check completed within last 6 months (mandatory to obtain prior to start date)
  • HIGH FIVE: Principles of Healthy Child Development training (asset)

Contract Period:
June August 16, 2024

*Must attend mandatory training from June 24 to June 28*Hours: per week Monday to Friday looking for individuals available 5 days a week (mandatory)
