Who You'll Work With
The Payroll & Benefits Specialist reports directly to the Payroll & Benefits Manager.

The role interfaces with multiple business leaders to troubleshoot escalated payroll issues and will communicate directly with employees to address their pay questions or concerns.

The Payroll and Benefits Specialist will also interact with external stakeholders as required and manage CloudMD's benefits provider to ensure a high level of satisfaction across the organization.


What You'll Be Doing


The primary focus of the Payroll & Benefits Specialist is to support the HR and Finance teams by playing a crucial role in guaranteeing prompt and precise payment to our employees across Canada and the USA.

This entails managing various aspects such as withholding, remitting, and reporting of legislated deductions, as well as handling all payroll-related transactions.

Additionally, they will be responsible for processing employee benefits enrollments through our HRIS, ensuring accurate entries for benefits and payroll, and generating monthly reports on benefit premiums for timely payments to our benefit carriers.

Furthermore, this position involves preparing headcount reports and other necessary reports as per the requirements.


Specifically, the Payroll and Benefits Specialist will:

  • Process bi-weekly payroll for hourly and salaried employees
  • Onboard, maintain and terminate employees as required
  • Resolve payroll errors and correct issues for employees
  • Identifying any areas of improvement within the payroll process and leading the implementation of new payroll processes and systems
  • Working with crossfunctional stakeholders to ensure the benefits and payroll services are delivered at best practice standards
  • Maintains the integrity of the payroll database, ensuring compliance with established procedures and internal controls
  • Prepares accurate recording of payroll commissions expenses and allocations in accounting system
  • Preparation and processing of commissions and related employee inquiries, i.e. different taxation methods
  • Preparation of month, quarter and yearend payroll reconciliations, analysis and reporting
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely reconciliation and reporting of payroll related government remittances
  • Continuously monitor changes to federal and provincial legislation impacting payroll and advise management when action is required
  • Formulating, documenting and updating operating procedures (SOPs)

What You Need to Be Successful

  • Proficient knowledge of general software such as Word, PowerPoint; and Management Reporter software
  • Intermediate Excel skills (lookups, pivots, sumifs, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processes and related reporting
  • Comfortable analyzing data, spotting numerical errors and identifying trends
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to structure and prepare analysis to support and lead decisionmaking as well as providing qualitative and quantitative analysis of business situations
  • Excellent technical skills, selfstarter, goaloriented and able to manage deadlines and deliverables
  • A disciplined work ethic with respect to confidentiality, time management, organizational skills and written and verbal communication with all peers, subordinates and Senior Management
  • Excellent critical analysis and problem solving and prioritization skills

What You Need to Stand Out

  • At least 2 years of experience with Payworks
  • CPA designation (obtained or in progress)
  • Experience working with Sunlife benefits and their portal
  • Bilingual (French and English) is an asset but not required
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with proven ability to manage competing priorities
  • Detailed oriented with a superior track record of achieving high quality
