The Role:


The Health & Safety Specialist will administer and implement the occupational health and safety programs in the manufacturing and construction job sites.

The Specialist provides management support and assisting operations staff to achieve the corporate goal of zero incidents.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Champion ABIC's life saving rules through safety training, job site inspections and reporting.
  • Maintain awareness of amendments to the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and Regulations, make recommendations for their implementation and assessing any changes to the needs of the business.
  • Perform job site safety compliance inspections including hazard analysis, safe work procedures, written reports and recommendations.
  • Report weekly health and safety metrics to the senior leadership team.
  • Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company safety program by employees and subcontractors.
  • Regularly review near misses, conduct root cause analysis and make recommendations
  • Maintain the safety policies, procedures and communication at the factory and on site.
  • Plan and organizing training programs/seminars for site and factory employees, with regard to WHMIS, Fall Protection, New Employee Orientation, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid, industry specific related issues, etc.
  • Ensure the timely completion of accident/injury reporting to the Human Resources department.
  • Inspect areas monthly, equipment, processes, and work activities for hazardous conditions in electrical utility areas and report recommendations.
  • Participate in the Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings, complete meeting minutes and draft minutes for review.
  • Update the Joint Health & Safety Committee communications board and ensure information is valid at all times.
  • Support operations as necessary and integrate safety, quality, and environmental initiatives into the operational process.
  • Coordinate health and safety training for employees as directed.
  • Verifies that work instructions (safe work procedures, job hazard analysis) are current and updated as the scope changes, responsible for "look ahead" mentality to eliminate risks
  • Assists in the investigation of incidents for cause identification and recommends corrective action, engages fully in a lesson learned continuous improvement process within the area of influence.
  • Helps operations prepare site specific material for safety meetings and toolbox talks
  • Perform other duties as required.

You will bring:


  • 5+ years of manufacturing and construction safety experience.
  • Completed Post-Secondary education in OHS from a registered institution.
  • Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and / or Certified Health and Safety
- consultant (CHSC)

  • Experience in executing a health & safety strategy and contributing to the ongoing
- development of this strategy

  • Experience in conducting health & safety orientations and site safety audits.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Computer background including experience with MS Word and Excel.
  • Strong safety record and the ability to work with a variety of individuals.
