Position Description:


This position will be part of the Occupational Hygiene and Safety team within the Occupational Health and Safety Services department.

The position will also have to work closely with the directors, managers, supervisors and project managers in Facilities Planning and Development, Plant Operations, Information Services, Infection Prevention and Control, Contractors and other departments as required to complete renovation and construction projects.


Responsible for the management of construction health and safety at SickKids, including providing and ensuring expertise and necessary skills for contractor safety management as it relates to all SickKids owned and/or occupied properties.


Here's What You'll Do

  • Drive and continuously improve the Contractor Safety Program.
  • Provide guidance, direction and advice to hospital personnel; promoting staff engagement and coaching staff; ensuring a complete understanding of organizational and departmental project delivery process.
  • Work with SickKids Managers and Supervisors to develop strategies to foster a safe work environment for hospital staff and contractors.
  • Build positive relationships with leadership and key stakeholders to develop and maintain the Contractor Safety Program, training and education to comply with OHS regulatory requirements, standards, guidelines and best practices.
  • Monitor and analyze trends and new legislation in order to develop/execute strategic plans to anticipate and mitigate risks to the organization.
  • Collaborate with leaders to develop innovative, evidencebased solutions of OHS issues through an indepth understanding of the organizations business practices and services, combined with expert knowledge of contractor safety management principles and practices.
  • Regularly meet with Facilities Development, Infrastructure Renewal, Information Services, Plant Operations, PGCRL and other stakeholders to identify projects coming up and inprogress.
  • Interact regularly with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) about upcoming and ongoing projects.
  • Provide input in all stages of project, renovation, maintenance and construction, including project initiation, design, construction documents, during construction, and postproject; while ensuring OHS legislation, standards, guidelines and best practices are met.
  • Attend project specific construction meetings.
  • Review contractor projectspecific site safety plans and methods of procedures, as required.
  • Ensures contractors comply with health and safety regulation and appropriate standards through regular audits.
  • Coordinate and lead orientation sessions on contractor health and safety to hospital personnel and contractors, as required.
  • Coordinate, lead and participate in activity permit meetings.
  • Conduct site inspections of construction projects for contractor adherence and compliance, communicate inspection deficiencies to project managers, and collaborate to resolve any violations.
  • Investigate and follow up to resolve reported staff health and safety concerns related to construction projects.
  • Review and familiarize yourself with SickKids hazardous substance inventory reports.
  • Performs other duties related to the position, as required.

Here's What You'll Need

  • University degree with formal training in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent) and ideally a certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), CIH or ROH.
  • Minimum of 5 years Occupational Health and Safety experience (preferably in a healthcare setting) with at least 2 years in Construction/Contractor safety.
  • Indepth understanding of OHS legislation, standards and best practices in Ontario with strength in Contractor and Construction Safety.
  • Training on Fundamentals of Infection Control during Construction, Renovation and Maintenance of Healthcare Facilities and Effective Implementation of CSA standard Z317 required, or commitment to obtain at next course offering after employment start date.
