Purpose


The Nova Scotia SPCA is looking for a creative, collaborative, and detail-oriented Philanthropy Communications Coordinator with experience in producing, coordinating, and disseminating communications and marketing materials.

This role is ideal for someone interested in learning and working in the fundraising sector.


The Philanthropy Communications Coordinator plays a central role in communicating the SPCA's vision and values to the public and informing them about programs and events.

Critical to this position is understanding storytelling, being comfortable on camera, and able to make outbound calls.


Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications, this position will work in a team with leads responsible for fundraising, volunteer engagement, marketing and communications.


The Nova Scotia SPCA is made up of six shelters, three veterinary hospitals, the Nova Scotia College of Animal Welfare, and four thrift stores and continues to grow.

This position will work in a fast-paced environment for a provincial organization.

While this position will not be working directly in a shelter, the Philanthropy Communications Coordinator will spend time with our shelter pets.


Responsibilities


The Philanthropy Communications Coordinator will be the lead on communicating and analyzing new media, supporting the marketing of programs and social enterprises, telling the stories of pets and families, engaging the community and business stakeholders, stewardship of those relationships.


The Philanthropy Communications Coordinator will be responsible for:
New Media

  • Coordinate and maintain creative and engaging content on social media platforms;
  • Update and maintain the SPCA website;
  • Purchase online advertising.
Marketing & Communications

  • Collaborate on and edit copy for marketing content;
  • Coordinate and distribute recurring projects such as brochures, rack cards, annual reports, and enewsletters;
  • Coordinate photography/video for marketing projects;
  • Support updating of marketing plans and status reports;
  • Develop creative fundraising and marketing collateral for capital campaigns;
  • Provide metrics, analytics and reports (monthly, quarterly, annually) as required; and
  • Support media communications needs as required such as responding to media calls, drafting media advisories or releases.
Fundraising

  • Lead the Nova Scotia SPCA Raffle;
  • Lead outreach for potential thirdparty events;
  • Maintain relationship with existing thirdparty event hosts;
  • Investigate potential fundraising initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Is a great communicator and collaborator;
  • Wants to learn more and get handson experience in marketing, communications and fundraising;
  • Enjoys working in a fastpaced, creative environment and thrives at meeting deadlines and adapting to change;
  • Is able to guide projects to stay on target with key audiences;
  • Writes in plain language, is easy to understand, engaging, audience tailored, in a relevant and consistent voice and tone; and
  • Has good judgement, can prioritize and organize their workload, and is able to work independently.

Applicants under consideration will have:

  • Completed a diploma in Communications or a related field from a recognized postsecondary institution;
  • Experience working in a nonprofit and/or customer service role;
  • Be able to demonstrate written communications abilities;
  • Webbased certifications in Google Analytics, MailChimp, etc, would be an asset;
  • Comfort producing quality content with video, photography and audio would be an asset.

Additional Information

  • Evenings and weekends may be required, must be willing to work a flexible schedule.
  • Driver's license is required

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to lift and carry 40 pounds.
  • Working conditions include working alone, working outside in varying weather conditions, frequent interruptions, and some evening meetings.

Hours of Work


Work responsibilities require a flexible schedule and a standard 40 hours per week plus additional overtime as required fulfilling the duties associated with the position.
