Student Learning Success is looking for casual Academic Aides to provide note taking, academic support and assistance for students with disabilities.

The employee will be confident in their writing and communication skills, demonstrate an ability to work both independently (with mínimal supervision) and in a team environment, have good judgement, and be proficient working with individuals with disabilities.

The position is casual and the hours may vary depending on the need for services.

The Academic Aide position may support students on Main Campus, Souch Campus, Patricia Campus, and online so the location of the work may vary depending on the need for services.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide in class computer assisted or manual note taking services for students with disabilities
  • Provide a concise summary of the course lectures class discussions, or group work, in a style that matches the student's note taking preference (e.g. point form, summary or comprehensive style).
  • Review and edit notes at the end of a class and ensure that the format and content are suitable for the student's needs.
  • Communicate and collaborate with appropriate staff in Student Learning Success and the student's instructors.
  • Assist the student with accessing course materials, setting up personal effects in the classroom, assistance moving to and from classes, and other related duties required.
  • Provide and accept feedback, assess effectiveness of services provided, and adjust accordingly.
  • Develop rapport with NAIT staff and students and facilitate resolution of concerns.
  • Provide information to instructors, staff, and students regarding note taking.
  • Know required support accommodations

Skills & Abilities:


  • Ability to interact effectively with students with disabilities.
  • Organizational, communication and problemsolving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively independently or in a teamwork environment.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and various note taking software
  • Excellent typing skills and clear handwriting skills
  • Willingness to learn and use new technologies.

Qualifications:


  • Grade 12 diploma
  • PSE diploma in a related field (e.g. Educational Assistant, Teacher's Assistant) or a PSE degree are beneficial
  • Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of postsecondary education
  • Experience in postsecondary environment is an asset
  • Driver's license as travel may be required between campuses

Remuneration:
$26.07 to $ 32.64 per hour plus 12% vacation and statutory holiday pay (Classification - Instructional Assistant I)

  • This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement_
