Duties and Responsibilities:

The incumbent will also act as a technical advisor to students when they build or test design projects.

The incumbent will be a joint participant in the University Health and Safety Program within the laboratory, and will monitor the activities of students and student employees to ensure safe and efficient procedures.

The incumbent will be thoroughly familiar with biohazard safety handling, ethical handling and storage of biohazardous specimens, and proficient using the tools/instruments typically used to process biohazardous specimens.

The incumbent will be responsible for performing the administrative duties associated with the position.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Familiar with machine shop hand tools, their nomenclature and use, supplies commonly used in machine shops, the use of personal computers and the software necessary to carry on the procedures specified, be able and authorized to operate a forklift as well as other heavy-duty equipment.
  • Able to learn, to adapt, and to implement innovative technologies related to the production of components.
  • Possess sound technical and "people" skills.
  • Technically proficient in mechanical systems technology, machine shop practices, CNC machining and programming approaches in the field of mechanical and aerospace be able to read and understand drawings and blueprints and to translate this information into computer machining codes for operation of CNC machine tools.
  • Ability to design jigs and fixtures required to produce parts.
  • Mechanical knowledge sufficient to help create final designs, CAD and conventional, from conceptual or partial design data.
  • Basic knowledge of Chemistry and chemical nomenclature, sufficient to allow the incumbent to understand WHMIS regulations and other regulations concerning hazardous materials, is highly desirable.

Education and Experience:


The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • 3 year mechanical engineering technology program and/or machining technology from a recognized institute of technology or an accredited equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in a position of similar responsibilities, preferably with a portion of this experience within a university environment.
