Reporting to the Manager, Health and Wellness Clinics the incumbent works collaboratively with others to promote the oral health clinic for client recruitment and supports the physical operation of the oral health clinic.

Conducting initial consultations with prospective clients the incumbent determines client classification, suitability for the clinic experience, and then assigns the client to a student based on clinical and student experiential needs.

This may include in-person oral health assessments working to the full scope of a dental hygienist.

The incumbent will work directly with the Program Coordinator and team members to ensure clients are suitable for the learning environment and will be able to provide students with learning outcomes aligned with curriculum.

This individual will lead client recruitment activities (e.g. marketing) as well as leading and participating in special events such as Open House, public health initiatives and other special events designed to enhance the student learning experience at Georgian College.

In addition, the incumbent provides student support in terms of client relations and conflict resolution to assist students with professional communication skills.

The incumbent will also provide program support in the clinic during peak clinic times.

This portion of the role will include equipment maintenance and repair, assist clinic staff in facilitating labs and demonstrating pre-clinical skills if needed, and also supports the clinic operations with respect to infection prevention and control (IPAC), reprocessing, radiography and other key functions that are critical to the safe operations and delivery of services within this fully functioning community oral health clinic.


Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Acts as the client liaison for various dental programs in the Oral Health Clinic which includes:
  • Creating and executing marketing activities to ensure strong community engagement with the Georgian College Oral Health Clinic (GCOHC) supporting a positive image and reputation with a focus on client recruitment
  • Screening prospective clients for suitability through a consultation process that may include an inperson oral assessment, collection of client health history information, etc. and then classifying these clients based on student learning requirements as dictated by the curriculum
  • Communicating with students and the program to determine which clients to assign to which students based on learning needs and then working with students to schedule those initial appointments
  • Acts as the primary resource for resolving client complaints or student/client conflicts before escalating to the Manager and/or Program Coordinator/Clinical Faculty Lead to facilitate resolution
Acts as a direct support for student learning in the GCOHC:

  • Supports the orientation of students and employees to the clinic as needed including the reinforcement of policies and procedures related to instrument reprocessing and IPAC, WHMIS and other occupational health and safety requirements
  • Reinforces program policies and procedures for lab and clinic settings
  • Supports in the set up of labs and clinics by being familiar with the curriculum and planning ahead for the needs of students in different programs and semesters
  • Identifies experience gaps and where possible, adjusts schedule to accommodate following consultation with Program Coordinator
  • Collaborates with the program to schedule remedial plans for students requiring extra help, arranges practice sessions complete with mannequins, equipment and supplies,
  • Assists in providing student experiences in inventory control, waste management and safe chemical handling
  • Supports the review of radiographs taken by students and assess for quality assurance and/or technical merit. Provides feedback regarding student (in) competencies to ensure learning standards are met
Radiography Quality Assurance
- ensures compliance with HARP regulations
- independently conducts x-rays as ordered by dentists for clients seeing students who do not perform this skill (i.e. denturism)
- helps/assists students with correct radiography procedures; in terms of technique, safety, dispensing and processing, etc.
- completes any necessary documentation in client files as required


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successfully completed a threeyear postsecondary degree/diploma in Oral Health Care (Dental Hygienist)
  • Five years experience as a dental hygienist with experience in client management, treatment coordination with familiarity in continuing care and recall systems, infection prevention and control and radiography
