Position
We are seeking a temporary
Barge Captain
for a six-month position beginning in May
. This is a fly-in, fly-out position at the Minto mine site with travel to Whitehorse, YT and charter flight to site every Thursday travel day. Rotation is 2 week on/2 week off. Travel to/from Whitehorse is paid for by the Company.
You will have:
- Current relevant personal certificates, including a marine medical;
- Transport Canada Certificate of Competency as a Master
- Limited 60 gross tonnage or higher;
- At least five years' experience in tug and barge operations on a river;
- Ability to develop and foster strong working relationships;
- Ability to work with a diverse crosscultural workforce;
- Strong analytical and problemsolving abilities;
- Valid driver's license; and
- Physically fit to perform the duties of the position.
Responsibilities
Safety:
- Provide training and direction to the deckhand on their duties and maintenance of the vessel.
- Safeguard the lives of passengers and crew.
- Work safely at all times, ensuring compliance with Yukon Occupational Health & Safety Regulations.
- Ensure Safe navigation, observe meteorological conditions and keep a lookout.
- Be familiar with the operations and deployment of life rafts, lifeboat and shore rescue boat.
- Lines of communication in the event of emergency or assistance being required.
- Offering assistance to vessels or persons in distress.
Regulation/Policy/Procedure:
- Ensure that the tug, barge and its operation are in compliance with Transport Canada Regulations.
- Observation of international, national and local laws and rules.
- Logbook entries of allimportant events affecting the vessel.
- Supplement general operational guidelines as appropriate.
- Maintain ship's publications, documents, crew certification, and other relevant paperwork.
- Operational tests of shipboard navigational equipment.
- Practice and promote company policies and procedures.
- Respect the terms of the Selkirk First Nations (SFN) land use Permit.
Environment:
- Practice and promote company environmental, health, safety and operational policies and procedures.
- Ensure safe tie off of the vessel while loading and offloading environmentally sensitive cargo.
- Nature of any hazardous cargo and the appropriate action in the event of spillage or fire.
- Be familiar with the locations and operation of spill kits kept at the landings and on the vessel.
- The level of water in bilges and ballast tanks.
- Direct and participate in refueling as required.
