Description
Reporting to the Manager of Technical Services, the Mechanical Specialist is an integral component of the Facilities Management Team. The mechanical specialist is a key collaborator with Maintenance, Operations, and the Capital Project teams. This position is relied upon for technical decision making and sound judgment. Drawing on technical design and engineering experience, this position is accountable for developing and maintaining NAIT's Mechanical Technical standards.

With a strong background in projects and construction, this position works in tandem with the Electrical Specialist to review and approve new and renovation project designs, also supporting construction with shop drawing and site reviews as well as participation in NAIT's commissioning program.

With feedback from maintenance and operations, the Mechanical Specialist takes initiative on developing and prioritizing scopes for system improvements and renewals under NAIT's capital maintenance plan.

Ultimately, the mechanical specialist is the steward of NAIT's mechanical infrastructure and a key player in NAIT's core mandate to deliver a resilient, safe and comfortable learning environment.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Support
- consultative services related to mechanical systems including the provision of technical guidance to design and project management teams both internal and external. This position shall ensure NAIT standards and industry best practices are implemented, providing guidance based on a solid understanding of the total cost of ownership.

  • Conceptual design
- this position explores system improvements related to efficiency, resilience and building life cycle, as well as informing Campus Planning and Capital Projects of the mechanical requirements and consequences of contemplated renovations and new builds.

  • Documentation
- development and maintenance of NAIT's technical standards, maintenance and creation of system schematics and record drawings, creation of system condition and performance reports.

  • Energy management
- review systems with the Energy manager, providing quality data and informing on optimization and improvement.

  • Develop long range system renewal plans with a special focus on NAIT's yearly CMR (capital maintenance and renewal) plan.
  • Provide estimates for mechanical scopes during project development.
  • Active participation in new construction commissioning as the Owner
  • Planning and implementing retrocommissioning.
  • Develop Owner's Project Requirements for new and renovation projects.
  • Procure and manage third party consultants for studies, reports, and assessments.
  • Supervision and guidance of junior resources.

Skills & Abilities:


  • CAD proficiency is essential. Must be capable of generating high quality new drawings as well as implementing and improving NAIT's CAD standards.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong applied understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Commissioning
- understanding, manipulating and optimizing systems.


Qualifications:


  • CET designation required.
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in commercial or institutional building design and/or construction.
  • Journeymen tradespeople will be considered provided they can demonstrate CAD proficiency.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license, as travel to satellite campuses is required.
  • REVIT experience is an asset.

Remuneration:
$2, $3,451.82 biweekly, plus a comprehensive benefits package (Classification - Technologist IV).

  • This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement._
