Job Description:


This program is open to nursing students completing their 3rd-year BScN and nursing students completing their first-year diploma RPN program with an accredited academic institution.

The program is designed to provide supernumerary support, as Clinical Externs do not replace staff or staffing shortages.


The Clinical Extern Program will:

  • Provide valuable pediatric clinical experience to student nurses.
  • Promote ongoing recruitment and retention of nursing professionals.
  • Enhance the care provided to patients by utilizing a collaborative care delivery model.
  • Profile CHEO as an employer of choice and destination for subsequent pregrad, consolidation, and nursing employment.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Clinical Extern will collaborate with a unit clinical team as a UCP under direct and or indirect supervision of an RN or RPN.

Clinical Externs will work consistent with organizational policies and professional standards while considering CNO guidance for UCPs. The Clinical Extern's clinical growth is supported by clinical mentors who promote self-reflective practice through coaching, feedback, and mentorship.

The Clinical Extern is a transitional role, whereby students develop clinical expertise, specialty knowledge, and self-confidence as they move from a student to a Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse role.

The Clinical Extern works alongside the patient care teams and obtains coaching, feedback, and mentorship while performing the following clinical tasks:

  • Obtaining vital sign measurements, reporting findings and impressions to RN/RPN documenting appropriately
  • Observing and reporting the patient's physical and psychological status to nursing staff-
  • Documenting all interventions for patient care-
  • Weighing patients-
  • Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting-
  • Assisting with observing and noting input and output-
  • Observing and reporting changes in patient's condition-
  • Lifting, positioning, turning, transferring, and ambulating patients-
  • Transporting patients and specimens as required-
  • Bed making.-
  • Responding to patient requests, including call bells-
  • Maintaining IV access checks and IV site assessment)Assisting with emergency situations as directed-
  • Clinical Externs in their final year of study may also enact selected controlled acts with supervision from an RN or RPN as appropriate.-
  • Other duties as required.

COMMITMENT- Clinical externs will work a minimum of 0.8 FTE to a maximum 1.0 FTE over the summer months of May, June, July, and August.

Some variation and flexibility in scheduling may exist.- Clinical externs will work in a fixed-term contract of a minimum of 0.2 FTE (45 hours in a 6-week period/approximately 7.5 hours per week) during the academic year.

Some variation and flexibility in scheduling may exist.- Clinical extern shifts are typically 3.75, 7.5, or 11.25 hours in length (days, evenings, nights, weekends).

Some variation and flexibility in shift length may exist.- Clinical Externs must attend corporate Clinical Extern orientation.


QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in and/or have completed one of the following:

  • Completing third year of an approved baccalaureate nursing program
  • Completing first year of a practical nursing program
  • Current BCLS
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English (Essential)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)
  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns, changes in the patient's condition(Essential) (Essential)
  • Ability to respond to physical demands (e.g., heavy lifts and transfers, run to codes, do restraints) (Essential)
  • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute clinical area (preferred)
  • Successful completed a recent pediatric clinical placement at CHEO (preferred)
  • Basic knowledge of performing vital signs, sterility and aseptic technique and established Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety practices (Essential)
  • Bilingual (English/ French) (preferred)
