Curatorial Assistant
Casual Term (August 29-December 20, 2024)
The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 22,000 citizens known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community. The city is located half an hour south of Vancouver, BC on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay.
This is specialized work assisting the Manager with curatorial duties within the Recreation & Culture Department. The Curatorial Assistant will be responsible for undertaking an inventory, researching, accessioning, creating condition reports of the City's public art and civic art collection.
Key Responsibilities:
• Performs detailed record-keeping; assists with collecting relevant data to create and update collection records, files, and inventories in paper and electronic formats; and assists with numbering, labeling, photographing, and cataloguing or art and artefacts;
• Undertakes analysis and reporting of the collection and environmental monitoring conditions;
• Undertakes primary and secondary research;
• Performs tasks to preserve and conserve the artefacts and art under the direction of the manager;
• Works in collaboration with the Manager and the City's Museum and archives operators to recommend accessions or de-accessions;
• Packs, moves, or coordinate the movement of art and artefact as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Sound knowledge of the techniques in identifying, handling, and caring of artefacts, art, and collection items;
• Ability to maintain accuracy in record-keeping and other administrative duties;
• Ability to perform use primary and secondary resources to conduct research;
• Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing;
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of external and internal contacts.
Qualifications and Experience
• Working towards a Bachelor of Arts in a related field (history, archeology, anthropology, archives, museum, heritage, arts, and arts administration);
• An interest in pursuing a career in the arts, culture, and heritage field;
• Previous experience working with art or artefact collections as asset.
This position is dependent upon grant funding. To meet the grant criteria the candidate must, be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or have been granted refugee status in Canada; be legally entitled to work in Canada; be between the ages of 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment; be under-employed or un-employed 2 currently; be a college or university graduate and not be receiving Employment Insurance benefits during the period of employment.
The applicant must be registered in the YCW candidate inventory; be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment and must not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW. Young Canada Works -
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment as well as outdoors which may require occasional explore to adverse weather conditions. Routine light lifting and occasional heavy lifting is required.
