The Role

  • To provide technical and educational support to the Music Diploma, Basic Musicianship, and Community Music School programs and to assist Music students and faculty with the use of all rehearsal and lab spaces, equipment and technology.
    Responsibilities

1.

Provides instructional support to the Music Diploma, Basic Musicianship, and Community Music School programs
- a) Establishes set up, take down, and general stage management guidance and support for faculty and student rehearsals and/or concerts at the College and offsite;
b) Provides guidance to students on, and ensures the safe use of, musical equipment and performance spaces;
c) Reports all safety concerns and assists with emergency procedures;
d) Ensures adequate inventory of supplies needed for course delivery (i.e., drum heads, guitar strings, scores, etc.);
e) Problem solve minor issues related to space usage, instruments, and technology issues during class time;

f) In consultation with Music faculty, supports set-up and invigilation of performance and academic exercises (i.e., final exams, juries, etc.)

g) Oversees music purchasing and tracks licensing fees (i.e. SOCAN).

Organizes operation and maintenance of piano lab and rehearsal spaces, Music Library, musical instrument collection, and music lockers
a) Develops guidelines and procedures for set up and take down of rehearsal and performance spaces;
b) Communicates and monitors set up and take down procedures to Music faculty and students;
c) Establishes guidelines and procedures for musical instrument storage;
d) Develops and implements a maintenance and upgrade schedule for the piano lab based on institutional goals and industry standards;
e) Collaborates with program coordinator, faculty, and CEIT to upgrade software in time for class delivery, ensuring that authorization and copy protection protocols are followed;
f) Develops and implements a strategy to ensure the long-term relevance of the specialty instructional equipment used in musical instruction including the piano lab and other music-specific classrooms;
g) Designs and implements organizing systems and usage guidelines for the music library;
h) Provides guidance and support to student assistants working in the music library;
i) Provides strategic oversight and guidance for the management and the musical instrument inventory, including the development and implementation of routine maintenance and long-term replacement schedules such as piano tunings, major instrument repairs and replacements;
j) Researches and advises on the purchase of instruments, ancillaries, and audio technology to maintain currency and support student learning;
k) Performs maintenance and minor repairs of musical instruments owned by Douglas College;
l) Models for students the routine maintenance of their instruments;
m) Establishes and maintains sustainable systems for loaning and tracking musical instruments; and
n) Oversees the distribution and renting of specialized music lockers.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Completion of a diploma or degree in Music at a recognized postsecondary institution with three years' related work experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent interpersonal and crosscultural communication skills including written and verbal fluency in the English language.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Good music literacy knowledge and skills (i.e. ability to read music, familiarity with vocal and instrumental ensemble contexts).
  • Familiarity with minor maintenance and repair wind and brass instruments.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
  • Maintaining a networked piano lab (including passwords, permissions, software authorizations, etc.)
  • Yamaha Clavinova digital pianos in a 16 piano and teacher set up
  • Group instruction technology (Korg GEC5 or similar) including problem solving real time sound issues (i.e. feedback in personal headphones).
  • Working with a wide cross section of individuals/students across a range of ages and ability levels with sensitivity and empathy
  • Working as part of a team and developing and sustaining good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Familiarity with maintaining a computer database for inventory purposes
  • Familiarity with live sound production and procedures (standard set up of microphones and equipment, monitoring live sound during performances, etc.)
  • Knowledge of basic electrical safety
